I've used the THD hotplate, and it works just as you would expect, but in the end the C+ sounds great at lowered volumes, since it's based on preamp distortion, which brings us into the important topic of preamp tubes, which is a matter of taste, and you will have to check out different ones until you are satisfied.

In my world I am absolutely no fan of poweramp distortion, because you can't get any clean tones, but if that's what you want, go ahead and try it out.

here's my current rig:

'81 boogie mk 2b, 60 watt, into a palmer junction for direct recording, then thru the junction into a WEBER MASS LITE, rated at 100 watts, into a AVATAR Vintage series 1x12 with a Celestion Heritage G12.

this works like a charm.

the weber allows me to set up any level of gain, whether it be preamp or poweramp, and i change the settings on the amp constantly, to suit what i want.

i use this specifically for recording, for live work i don't use the weber.
