I had the misfortune of discovering one of my very expensive Mesa STR450's (That I used to use when I had a Stiletto) was bad tonight, so I pulled them out, and replaced them with JJ EL34L's, and the tone is very different. Tighter, Cleaner, less...midrange perhaps...not sure...more gainy, and I'm not so sure this is a good thing. I think the JJ's work magnificently for Recto's, but not so much for the Mark V. Gonna have to try the Winged C's now. The EL34L's make my Recto a magnificent animal, taming the beast and giving me a tight punch like you can't believe, but in the already tight mark, it almost feels somewhat unnatural. Couldn't crank it tonight (after midnight already), but tomorrow I will, just to double check, but it just feels thinner now, and too tight. Not so bubbly.
:(

I'll tell ya when I get around to buying them.

I got to crank the EL34L's just now, and it is tight. Not as warm as with the 450's (Siemens). It's as if there is something missing, but yet the overall tone is tighter. It's actually quite amazing, how Power Tubes make such a difference in overall tone. Like I said, In a Recto, EL34L's all the way.

Not so sure they are right for a Mark V.
