My amp shipped with Sovtek EL84's, and JJ ECC83S's.

I put some JJ EL84's in there, and dug up some of my old JJ ECC803S's. The 803's added some nice top end sizzle to the sound.

I'm curious to know........did changing the tubes make any difference with the hiss on the clean modes in the 15 & 25 watt power settings?

I'm interested to know too...I ended up returning mine, then purchasing it back despite the noise -- it sounds great; but would like to tame that hiss some.

There's a little hiss with a high gain setting, but I play the amp with the master volumes at 12:00, and I have no problems with squeal, or other noise problems. :?:

The JJ-803's have an extended highend, so I gained a little more pick attack; which would in theory add more hiss to the background. But again, I don't think it's out of proportion. Maybe you got a dud.

No, if you search the forum, you will find that just about every owner is complaining of the high noise floor with this amp...and it is primarily in channel 1 top boost mode 15 & 25 watts...the 5 watt setting is dead quiet.

Well, all I can say about that is that it's a high gain amp. You're going to get some background noise. But to me, it's a non issue if you're playing with a band. Maybe it's my quiet EMG-X's that give me the edge. :D

I love the amp, and yes, in a band setting it's not an issue. But the amp was supposed to be geared towards the studio...and it's too noisy at the wattage setting --where the real goods lie (15 - 25 Watts top top boost)

"Well, all I can say about that is that it's a high gain amp"

I don't see why the clean channel should be affected more than the, erm, high gain channel though! ;-)

As a new Mesa owner I am new to this multi channel switching stuff. That said...I love my new Transatlantic.

One thing I wish for was a little more CHUG on the HI2 setting on the dirty channel. I have found the gain does not have that big of a range and dialing it up does not add much more gain, just more color to tone.

Do certain tubes effect certain modes? I would not change anything but that once channel. If I need that extra drive (rare) I just use a pedal (MXR zakk wylde). That is the chugg I am looking for.

thanks

I don't really use the HI 2 channel much. I have been experimenting with a RAT in front though and having fun with that
