So I have owned two TOV's a head and a combo. I greatly regret selling the head that I had, so I sold my combo to fund another. A local music store (which I have a considerable amount of store credit at) has a TOV head in "Like New" condition and a 2 channel DR in good condition. I haven't seen either one of them yet they are getting transfered up to my area from a different store (not GC, they would never move an amp from one store to another so you could try it out).
They are both the same price, about 1075.
I have owned the three channel DR but never the 2 (aside from the tov). So my question is, besides the obvious what is the difference? I know the tov has reverb, trem, and blues mode but is everything else identical? I have heard the trem has a better clean channel but I have never been able to compare. I can probably get the DR a little cheaper due to it's cosmetic condition but not much. So is there any reason I would choose the dual?
I am of course going to try them both at the store on thursday and the TOV is kind of a no brainer because I already know I love them. I would really like to get some feedback because I am very curious about the DR.
Also how do I tell if it is one of the more desirable two channels? There are some good dudes at this store but there are also some that wouldn't know the difference between a pre500 and a nomad.

Thanks

Serial numbers on the Dual will tell you a lot. Anything after 1500 or so is a typical Revision G. Around 15000 or so they went to the newer 3 channel transformers. Figure about 1800 per year, and that will approximate what year it might be.

I'd take a tremoverb over a 2ch, unless it's one of the pre500 things. Tremoverb and a 2ch will sound pretty much the same, except the former has more features and great clean. To identify a pre500, read my website.

I recently saw a guy playing a Recto and the whole show I'm thinking "****, why doesn't my dual sound that good?" Turns out he was playing a TOV. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2 ch Dual, but ****, that TOV sounded freaking awesome.

The ToV definitely has a different feel than the 2 channel - I would personally take the ToV over the 2 channel anyday, but your ears and hands will be the best judge.

Other than Dual Rectifier pre500 I got the impression they were basically similar with the ToV having Reverb, Tremolo and "Blue" Mode on the Red Channel.

This was discuss before and some of us got the impression the DR's Red Channel Modern Hi-Gain Mode was a bit more sensitive (more gain) than the ToV's but a member that owned both say they're actual the same.

Not sure how the cloning works on the DR but bottom line ToV has more options. DR is a great amp if you don't need the extra options that the ToV has.
