The reverb in my LSS is very nice but IMO the blend pot is too sensitive. Turn it just a touch and there's just too much reverb in the mix. So I set mine almost next to minimum. I was thinking of swapping an 12at7 tube in to reduce the gain since most reverb unit uses this tube.
Has anyone done this and is it ok to sub in a lower gain tube in this possition ?
thanks,

It should be fine to use an AT7.

I just tried this in my Heartbreaker head. It changed the tone a bit and increased the depth a little too.

In the end, I went back with the AX7, but the Heartbreaker has a completely different (newly modified by me  ) Reverb than the Lonestar.

You may want to look at the schematic and see what the 2nd half of that tube does though. It may adversely affect your tone on 1 of the channels.

I don't think that there's a Lonestar schematic available for the public. I asked the amp tech at mesa service center, and he can't give me a copy.

The tube task chart is in the manual, downloadable at Mesa's website.
V4A and V4B are reverb return and reverb drive, respectively. (Two sides of the same tube).
12AX7s have a gain factor of 100. 12AT7s are 60. A 5751 is in between, at 70.

V4B is the Reverb "Drive," or Send.
V4A is the Reverb Return.

You can safely try the following tubes in your V4 spot, without changing the tone drastically. Keep in mind that the Reverb does add some coloration to your tone and this may be something that you decide you don't like.

The following tubes will work:
12AX7 (choose a Ruby, JJ, NOS, Sino, or Tung-Sol RI for less gain than Mesa tubes)
12AT7
5751
12AU7 (extremely low gain)

V5 is your Phase Inverter and shouldn't need replacing.

I've found the same - while I've read that the LSS has "incredible reverb" it seems - (typical) to me and like the original poster said... it's usually to heavy. I to have mine at minimum - anything above 9 oclock just gives a horribly unreal characteristic.

I put a 12at7 in and here's the results:
I was able to use a little more range of the blend pot. Say if off/minimum is 0 and max is 10, previously my setting was around 1 or less. Now I can turn it up to 3. Much better blend. I didn't notice any tone or depth change.
It does what I'd hoped it would do so I'm going to stick with this setup.

I'm prolly around 2-3 myself - please translate - what is

"12at7"?

Is that a tube? you mean - replace one with this?
