Got me a TOV last weekend and I've been fiddling with it a lot.

It sounds big! Really big!

I'm taking it to our practice space this weekend to hear it loud and proud!

Is there any pointers you guys can give me to get the exact sound I want?

I've already carved into my mind that settings between 11:00 and 1:00 sound best on both channels for the controls. But I'm trying to make my sound as clear as possible. I've briefly fiddled with the amp on loud volume, so I can't really find out at the house what settings I'm gonna be using in the practice space.

I play a lot of melodic hardcore, (Marshall territory it seems lol) so I need to have a punchy but defined sound. I've found so far, that the Bold setting is really my thing. (but not set in stone, depending on your pointers) Turning back the gain a bit, I get a lot of definition from the amp. Is there any suggestions you can do as far as the vintage and modern channels go for this kind of a crunch/high gain sound? I currently have modern cloned to vintage, since I seem to be getting more middy sounds from Vintage. What about Silicon Diode or Tube? Silicon Diode makes the sound really stand out.

What are your - as a TOV user - experiences with getting a very punchy, very defined, not too saturated, fat sound from the TOV?

Also, what tubes are recommended for my playing style? JJ 6L6's?

It takes a lot of getting used to, tweaking the controls, coming from my Quad. Which I'm probably going to put at home to collect dust for a while.

Gonna be putting this baby (combo version btw) on a Bogner Oversized 2x12 with V30's, so I should be getting a pretty wide, spread sound because of the different speakers.

Hope you guys can give me some tips for the sound.

Cheers,

Ralf

when i had one i found the blues mode on the modern channel was awesome for clean and singing high gainish leads. (bold/solid state) it was my favorite mode on the amp. i don't know if you will get quite enough gain for your style, but don't let the blues name fool you there's quite a lot of gain in tap.

the solidstate setting seems to give more definition to the sound on low volumes. Whereas the tube setting is more creamy.

I'm gonna turn this baby up tonight and try to get some proper settings out of it!

Cheers,

Ralf

I've had a TOV head w/ recto cabs for about 8 months now and completely love it. The really great thing about it is it's versatility and range. Mine is set up with 6L6's and I go for the opposite of you.... I like spongy and vacuum tube recto but I play mostly rythm. My guess is that you would also be most happy with EL34's for more of a Marshall tone as they are tighter than the 6L6's.
And as Boogafunk says, play with the blues channel for a nice biting clean tone.

I really like EL34s when I had this amp. I played the 6L6s back to back. And I definately thought it made the amp more punchy and not as dark w/ the EL34s.
