Why does anybody use anything other than Schallers?

Assuming I count as an "anybody"...

Because Shcallers, when they get more than a couple of years old, (by which I mean, (over five) develop the habit of twisting so that the open part of the "U" is always pointing downward, leaving you relying on that little pin, which isn't always reliable.

My trick with the Schaller involves using a little bit of "red" loctite on the threads when you first install and orient the strap pieces. Use a ratchet in one hand and pliers in the other to properly orient the straplock while you tighten the piss out of it. My LP actually wore out the guitar body portion of a Schaller, causing too much slop from side to side. But that took nearly 20 years to happen  .

That sounds like it would be quite effective. The decision was partly emotional (not rational) to be sure, but I just wanted a system I wouldn't have to go all wrench-monkey on. (I'm not the handiest guy on my block, I'm afraid.)

Been using Schallers for 20 something years, never a problem. It does really suck to drop your guitar though :( . Unfortunately, it seems to happen to everyone at some point.

Kinda cracks me up that everybody keeps saying they had Schallers on their LP and they failed.

My Paul has had Schallers for... well, about the entirety of its 9-10 year life span, and never had a failure yet, but I actually do get a bit worried, and yes, the little U never stays anywhere but down anymore.. .scary! heh.

I do prefer Dunlop's though and fitted the rest of my axes with 'em. It's funny, I still have to make sure the Schallers are tightened up every couple days, but the Dunlops have been rock solid... course, I've only been using them for about four years so far, so we'll see what happens a decade from now. My only thing with straplocks is that I'm shocked that anybody in the world would play without some form of them, even if it's just duct-tape, heh.
