hello..when i started putting my system together i hadn't much money so got a peavey preamp and a marshall power amp and got a local guy to make 2 speaker cabs (1*12's)..i now have triaxis and 2 90 power amp and g system... and am now looking at the speakers...i'm not sure how good the guy that built them is..he put a 200 watt celestion in each..has anyone any experience with different speakers and different watts..(difference in sound between 100 watt and 200 watt say)..open or closed back..they sound a bit harsh..i'm looking for smooth eric johnson type sound..any help..i still want 2 1*12 cabs..

A 200 watt speaker will keep the sound coming from your amp true and not color it like a lower watt speaker. Some like the sound of the lower watt speaker and some don't. The EVM-12L 200w speaker was considered the best compliment for the Mark Series amps and some feel it is an essential part of a true Boogie tone. From his website, EJ uses Fender Deluxe Reverb combos and Marshall 50w Plexi heads with 4x12 cabinets housing 25 watt speakers. With his setup he takes advantage of all the different tonal colors provided by the combos for his clean tones and the Marshall 4x12 with low watt speakers for his dirty tones. Your setup is definitely not like EJs but you will be able to get a smooth sound from it.

I could be wrong but I believe a 1x12 cabinet will never give you the sound of a 2x12 open back combo or a 4x12 closed back cabinet. If you have a nearby music store or know other guitarists, you should your rig through their cabinets just to see how different it can sound through those cabinets. I have been combing this forum for months and its seems the overall opinion is to try as many different set ups as you can at music stores, friends gear, etc. I even met a guy in Chicago who had set up a gear conference!!! He got something like 40 guitarists all to show up with their various setups and everyone tried each others gear. He said they had Mesa, Marshall, Fender, Orange, HiWatt, Randall, Crate, you name it. I wish I had met him sooner! There is also a music store in Chicago Make'n Music that does this same thing annually.

Anyway, the best way to figure out what will work for you is to try out as many different set ups as you can. Also, trying to keep all of your settings and volume levels relatively consistent so you can have a true comparison. Equipment can have vastly different tone at different volumes. Good luck.

thanks for that...someone once said to me that lower watt speakers react quicker and give smoother sound because of less powerfull magnet... does that sound right?

i would vote for the evm12l, but only in the right cab. (the theile) i am not farmiliar with the triaxis but i suspect it will do fine for the sound you are talking about, especially with the tc electronics unit to give you that ej delay. the most ej sound i ever heard in person was a quad simul290 into a thiele. i imagine that the triaxis will get there as well. one thing to remember though is that your technique will play a big role. for a tone like eric's there is no amp cab combination that will give you his tone without good technique.

as far as low wattage speakers i would recommend against them with that monster power amp you're running unless you want to run 4 or so. also i don't think they are smoother by nature. smooth is the last thing i think of when it comes to greenbacks for example. mostly depends on what you're putting into them and what they were designed for.

Not necessarily. It's a common misconception, though, probably because that's the way amplifiers are rated - in terms of power (output) before distortion.

Speakers, OTOH, are rated at input power before damage, which has nothing to do with cleanliness or distortion. Power capacity is a function of how much heat the thing can handle before the voice coil deforms or melts; distortion characteristics are mostly determined by cone design.

Look at the Vintage 30 - it's rated at 60W (or more, depending upon who's doing the rating), but it starts to give up at less than half that power.

Conversely, you could take something like an EVM and build it with a 25W voice coil, and you'd have a speaker that never distorts - it would blow first.

thanks for advice..i went to my nearest boogie dealer (170ish miles away) and he gave me a price of 1000 euro (1200 dollars) for one 1*12 boogie cab with 90 watt celestion..i need two and i can't justify that sort of money..we get screwed in europe for boogie stuff...don't know what i'll do.

Did I read your post right that you already have 2 custom made 1x12 cabinets?

If you don't like the sound of the speakers in those cabs just replace the speakers. If you want Celestion speakers, I would think you could get a non-Boogie labeled Celestion speaker for a decent price as I believe some of them are still made in the UK.

If you want a different cab (closed, open, ported) you could build them.

Here is a link to some plans made by ElectroVoice.

http://archives.telex.com/archives/...nce if you want to go that route. Good luck.

I suppose what i wanted to know is how much does the cab affect the sound and which affects more the speaker or cab..I'll check out those links
...thanks

How is the craigslist market over there where your from for boogie gear? I always use craigslist for getting gear since you can find some really great deals...but I realize that the markets could be different.

If you swap a speaker into a different cabinet...
...you'll be able to tell it's the same speaker, but it will sound different. Depending on the configuration it could be brighter or darker.

If you swap one speaker for a different speaker in the same cab...
...you will say "whoa" and start messing with your dials.
