what do you guys think.

i realize im not too happy with the distortion tone on my f-50 head.

i want a punchy, organic, natural tube tone.

ill be testing them both out before i make a choice.

any opinions???

Shameless plug...i got a dsl50 and 100 in the classifieds section...flamethrowers!! I also owned an f50 halfstack so i know where your coming from.

playdos, what amp do you prefer the dsl 50 or the 100?
im more of a 50 watt guy myself.

is the dsl 50 a big step up from the f-50 tone wise?

What kind of settings are you running with your F-50? And what kind of pickups are you using?

+1

I almost ditched mine. Thankfully, nobody went for my asking price, even though 5 or so people commented on how low it was.

I'd definitely be kicking myself in the *** now if it had sold.

Here are a couple of thoughts:

1) Make sure your tubes are good.

2) Settings can make all the difference.

3) You may be a candidate for an MXR 10-band EQ in the loop. If you've never tried it before, I think you'll be surprised at the dramatic difference an EQ can make.

4) When I think of my F-100, "punchy, organic, natural tube tone" is what comes to mind. It's tighter than my Tremoverb, so for metal, it works better for the thrash-type shenanigans, and the clean is better.

5) If the Marshall sound is what you're really after, get a Marshall, but make sure to try a Stiletto.

i hear ya about the f series distortion being punchy warm and organic. but there is a certain characteristic in the distortion tone that i wasnt enjoying. ive had the amp since 05' and have always heard this aspect of it's tone, so it isnt worn out tubes or my settings.
overall the f 50 has a nice tone
i bought a dsl 50 marshall and sold it already. just wasnt my sound. i guess im a 6L6 guy.
but now i just got a tremoverb combo and after one jam session with it i can say that ive found my amp!
for now...
seriously, it sounds insane. plenty tight, especially when used with my closed back 2x12.

Well it all depends on what kind of gain that you are after. If you want a Mark Series type grunt the "F" will do it for me. The one thing that I have found that volume is the key to these amps to get them to sound good (IMO) and not crazy loud, but not a bedroom amp. As far as the Verb, the ones I messed with had good tone at whisper volume and got even better with the V knob cranked.

yep. i was tweaking the vintage hi gain after rehearsal at a low volume and it sounded sweet. but i cranked it up a bit and it suddenly became punchy and more brutal. and i keep the gain relatively low (11-12 oclock).
my tone isnt the modern hi gain right now.
the vintage hi gain has a punchy, warm, organic, smooth crunch thats very responsive to how hard to hit the strings. thats my tone.

i guess the tone im sort of striving (and getting) for is in the ballpark of metallica's load era/garage inc. tones.
