Sell my recto v2 for a Roadster help?

Hi,

I have a mint Rectoverb V2 and I like it ok but I was thinking about selling it for a Roadster. To me it sounds like the RS is a big upgrade from what I have. Probably the main issue I have with the Recto is its kinda cold feeling? Ya know.. hard to explain but it needs more sag, etc. this probably comes from not having a tube rectifier. I know the clean in the RS sounds a lot better then on the rectos. My tone influences range from Eric johnson, David Gilmore, Ty Tabor, etc.. so I like a variety of tones.

Any others can help me decide if going to a RS would be a ig step up.

It all depends.

The dual recto set with the tube recto has just enough sag for me, but still tight enough to not sound like complete mud when playing heavy stuff.

My best advice would be to try it out first and see if thats the sound youre after. Also don't be afraid to try a stiletto - those have a completely different voicing when it comes to gain, most due to the tube difference, but with proper settings it might the distortion sound youre looking.

What kind of guitars are you playing and are you using any effects? Your pickups will have a big effect on your tone too. I have a ROV series one and I sounds pretty warm to me. I play blues rock suing Tom Anderson guitars.

Maybe another speaker would help? Just a thought.

I am playing through a 1x12 mesa cab with C90 and or a Carvin Legacy with V30s in there.

My guitar is a Brian Moore or a 57 Start reissue. Its more of an amp thing I think ..

I tried the Roadster and to me it is VERY versatile but didn't have the same gain tones as my ROV series 2 combo. Tele_Jas has one and gets a number of great sounds, but he plays in a band that plays a wide variety of music and he requires more from an amp than I do.
I have yet to play an amp that I like as much as my ROV in regards to the overdrive channel.... 8)

The Stiletto is a completey different animal and can't do Recto tones....It's like telling someone who wants steak to try Salmon.

I find the Roadster a bit more "lively" feeling and sounding. I think it may be due to the closed back combo and V30 speaker. I'm sure the tube rectifier plays a part in the tone too.

It is voiced like the rest of the Rectifier family, but it also seems to have something a bit different too that I can't put my finger on?? Not better or worse, just different and it may be the V30 speaker?

Now the clean channel is a different story!! The cleans on the Roadster are some of the best I've heard in any amp (with more than one channel that is). You can get some nice blues tones and some classic rock tones from the "Tweed" mode and the "Brit" mode.

Are you playing a Rectoverb combo or head/cab?? The cab might make a difference too if you are using a cab.... Also, I may be in the market for a Rectoverb combo in the near future and we may be able to work out some kind of a trade??

Why am I looking at a ROV again after such high reviews of the Roadster?? Well, as Raz said, I play several different styles and it's getting to the point in my band where we're playing more originals and my AC30 fits the bill better and I'm only use one of the Distortion channels on my Roadster and a Rectoverb would do that pretty good for me.

I really like my ROV but its just alittle to edgy for me. I like the notes to be alittle more rounded and fluid. I am thinking that maybe a Stilleto might be more what I might be looking for( I think).

Dont get me wrong it sounds great.. but not quite what I am looking for. But its not like I have to get rid of it.. haha..

If this wasn't a boogie forum I would tell you to get a Soldano. If you use de diodes you'll not need one more rectifier tube. A compressor/sustainer could help, or an od pedal in front of the amp. The stilletos seems like a good choice though.

With versatility comes compromise and a tradeoff in tone to make an amp as versatile as it is. The ROV was made for heavier music in mind whereas the Roadster was made with versatility in mind. The ROV is more aggressively voiced and has a chainsaw like character when under highgain whereas the Roadster is aggressive in it's own way but doesn't have the aggressive chainsaw like character under high gain. Having said that the Roadster has the Rectifier Flavor but cannot and will not have the same Rectifer tone as a regular Rectifer.
