Hey guys, I just got my first Recto in, and its a 2 channel Rev G. S/N 3276
But I looked at that site that helps you identify your recto, and supposedly the schumacher trannys have written "E1A 606" So I checked mine, and It says "E1A606 249" So I thought, "Cool, it has schumachers in it!" But then I looked under the chassis, on the transformer, and saw a sticker with the numbers "12.12 07" Which Fluff then told me meant that the trannys had been replaced.
That made me go 'wtf' since, I fail to see how it can have gotten a newer trannys replaced with a discontinued model, in the your of 2007..?! I seriously need some one to put some pieces together :|

And also, I was looking for the Production / Inspection date under the chassis, but failed to find anything.. Is it hidden under a chip, or could it have been removed??

Any help is appreciated!!

Aha... How are they compared to the originals?

And also, at the exact place where the inspection date of the amp is written, mine says "K.P" instead. What the **** is that supposed to mean?

I would imagine the new ones are made exactly the same as the old ones. Or at least as close as they can get nowadays. When Randall finds something he likes, he tends to stick with it.

I have no idea with K.P. means. I'd call Boogie and ask them!

Sounds like you are a bit wound up in this.

An EIA-606 - 249 is from week 49 of 1992. Your amp is most likely a 1993-1994. Of the thirty tube amps I have gone through I have seen countless notes, messages and even Randall Smith's comments in amps, but a sticker with a date does not mean the transformer was replaced. Changing end bells is a major pain and IMHO not worth the trouble to hide on a $ 1000-1200 amp. The initials K.P. could be anyone from who put the pots in, wiring, play tested etc. By 1993/94 the production of the recto was in full swing and Mesa only documented the progression of the amps production on a hang tag.

Have you called Mesa with the serial # ? If not, look at the dates on the filter caps and components in the amp. It will most likely be around 6 months post give or take.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up, sure helped a lot!
first, about the transformer serial, does that mean that the EIA606 has nothing to do with it being a Schumacher, or is it still a Schumacher? Both of the transformers has the EIA606, just with a different number afterwards.

I actually wrote to Mesa, and when I mentioned the sticker and told them that I had been told it was replaced, he just started searching his database for a repair date, and realizing there were none, he just said that he didn't know what it was, and that K.P was probably the guy who repaired it, when he replaced the circuit board(what?? lol) because they didn't have anyone with he Initials K.P. who put it there.

And I havn't actually seen any other tags or notes under the chassis, so about those, I'm not sure.
And what is the "12.12.07" sticker then about?!

So the only thing that still fucks my brain is the K.P thing.. It shall forever remain a mystery, until someone is more wise than me, acknowledges me..

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it sounds good and looks like it hasn't been screwed around with, enjoy!

If it has the original power supply caps, I would change those. They have a limited lifespan and will fail at some point. It's really easy and will tighten up your tone a bit.

I sell a recap kit using F&T caps on eBay if you're ever interested.

606 is the code registered with the EIA for Schumacher. The next set of numbers is the year of production (2 = 1992) and the week it was manufactured (49 is week 49 of 1992).
As for K.P., who knows. Maybe they worked at Mesa for a week or it was tech who did some slight repair possibly on 12/12/07.

Post some pics.

Alright, here are some photos I had on my phone, perhaps you can spot something I couldn't, even though they are pretty bad..

The Mesa 561137 is the Export power transformer. Most likely, the date is when it may have been converted from 240V back to 120V. That amp was built for the overseas market and most likely came back to the USA at some point. The 561137 is very uncommon to see in the US, but they rarely pop up.
Other than that, it looks 100% Recto to me.

The gray power cable is a dead giveaway that it is and export version also.

Judging by the tranny codes and filter cap dates, the amp is from 1993 or early 1994.

Congrats,

Ed

Read grasshopper, read.

If you are still unsure about this amp, I'll take it off your hands. It's a great find.

Oh no, I most certainly ain't thinking about getting rid of it. It is indeed amazing, but I just care more about the unknown history of this amp, more than the previous owner apparently..

The history will become a whole lot more known with a simple search of the forum!

Hot tip: Search "Early Duals" and "Pre 500 Dual Rec". Watch a whole pile of threads come up!

Its not the general story of the early rectos I care about, but the history particularly for this specific amp

This has got to be the only forum where a post with the words 'identify, tranny, and recto' can all be in the subject line and not immediately get flagged to to a moderator.
