As I spoke about in my thread here http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=52158 I just got back into playing after a 2yr hiatus. Anyway, I live in a Unit block and my amp is LOUD! I am looking at some options so I can play yet my volume isn't extreme. Even with a Powerbrake my wife says it is too load for the neighbors after about 6pm :p

What do I need to put in between my Powerbrake and my headphones so I don't blow anything up... including my ears!

Thanks :)

That is easy. Turn the amp off, and turn on your computer and fire up any of the many guitar modeling software programs (POD Farm, Guitar Rig, Amplitube, etc.).

Sounds like you have the wrong amp for an apartment.

You could also try an ISO cab and then pipe the mic'd tone through your computer and into your headphones.

Thanks for the response, but what your saying is there is no hope of running my Roadster through Headphones?

That is what I am saying, yes. You are basically trying to race your dragster while still keeping it in the garage, ya know?

well if you want to try making your headphones explode and going deaf then turn to channel 4 and let it rip.

Dont they still have Rockman's around?

Set the Powerbrake one click above silence and use the amp's Output Level control to adjust the volume. You should be able to get it down to a whisper like that, even through the speakers. Don't think that just because you have an attenuator, you need to crank the amp right up... it actually sounds better if you don't.

If you really, really must use headphones, try it - with the Powerbrake down to the last click above silence, there's no risk of blowing anything (not even the headphones - the last click is roughly -30dB, so a 100W amp fully cranked is reduced to 100mW at the output) - but you may need an EQ in the amp's loop to make it sound good. Set it in a 'breaking wave' shape with the highest slider as far down as it will go and work from there. You will also need a mono-to-stereo adaptor for the phones or you'll only get signal on the left side.

Just for what it's worth, ignore all the internet stuff you read about the Powerbrake 'sucking tone' or sounding crap - I have one, and I've several times directly compared it to other attenuators, including several that are apparently very highly regarded. Every time, the Powerbrake has won - and I don't mean just over the first few clicks either.

I've never tried it through headphones (I hate playing guitar through phones actually) but I think I'll give it a go and see what happens :).
