The Austin traffic was nasty as usual, but I survived and picked up my Roadster 2X12 combo yesterday. It came with 6L6GC's in the blue color code, and it did have Chinese Mesa 12AX7's in V3 & V5.
I played the stock tubes for a bit, then replaced them with some Tung-sol EL34's from the Tube Depot to warm things up a bit. And they certainly did.
While the Rectifier gain was all that, I found myself spending the most time on Channel 1 Tweed & Channel 2 Brit. I found both channels to be so much better with EL34's!
I didn't have a chance to open the amp up as I was in my home, but I will visit the practice space this weekend and let 'er rip.
Lots of folks talk about how much the 2X12 weighs. It wasn't as heavy as I thought it'd be. I guess it helps being 6'8" 285 lbs.
The foot controller is very nice as is the reverb. After playing through small reverb tanks and large ones, I know that I prefer the large ones. They seem more natural and not so forced.
This amp passed the "cool test" with my son, as he said it's the best-looking amp I've owned. His only complaint is that I spent too much time on channels 1 & 2 and not enough time on channel 4's modern setting.
I tried the diode & tube rectifier but found that I preferred the tube rectifier on every channel. And I preferred leaving the amp on spongy.
Glad I purchased the amp!
