I just bought a Mesa Roadster and it's an incredible amp. It was an upgrade from my Carvin V3 and so now I'm running the Roadster through the V3 cab (closed back with v30s). It sounds great, but I was wondering if I puchased the Mesa 4x12 closed back cabinet would I experience a large improvement in tone? The speakers would be the same between the 2(v30s) as well as the basic construction (closed back).

Do you guys think droppin the 600-900 bucks is worth it to upgrade to the mesa cab?

Thanks for the advice!

Im not 100% on this, but I believe mesa's V-30's are proprietary and are still made in the UK, using the old method. instead of the chinese made with the faster drying glues..........I've been meaning to call mesa up and ask.

It depends on what you're going for, a Mesa cab adds it's own signature to your final tone. You can really fine tune your Roadster's tone by cab/speaker choice. My Roadster sounds quite different through my Roadking 4x12 and then switching to a Marshall style 4x12 for instance.

Both sound great, but different.

Also the cab itself has just as much tonal impact as the speaker type imo. I've encountered that first hand, lol.

I did ask Mesa once, and they told me they still request them to be made in the UK...

thanks guys, that really helps. Kind of reaffirms what I was kind of thinking already, but wasn't 100% sure of my assumptions. Ill probably drop the money on a mesa cab, should be great! :D

Do yourself a favor...forget about the Mesa cab, and get a Mills cab. If you're buying new, they come out to be basically the same price, and the Mills blows any Mesa cab out of the water!

I sold ALL my Mesa cabs after getting my first Mills cab. I now run a fullstack, and it is unbelievable!

There really isn't any cab that is "the" cab to use with any amp.

All cabinets sounds different. Even cabinets that are the same can sound totally different, depending on age. Mesa cabs are generally known to really enhance the bass that most rectifiers have to offer. Marshall cabs, which are what most other cabs are modeled after, are significantly smaller than a rectifier cab, therefor sound a little more tight and focused... which IMO is kind of defeating the purpose of buying a recto.

I thought about getting a new cab one day... went to the local non-guitar center music store and A/B'd my Roadster with an Orange 4x12 and a Vader 4x12... and I am still stuck on my rec cab.

I use the Oversized 4x12 and I think it was better overall for me vs the Standard 4x12. Both sounded great though.

is your recto oversized 4x12 straight or slant?

It's a slant but it is housed in a roadcase which is obviously straight.
