Hello all,

New to this forum and Mesa Boogie.

I have just bought a Roadking II head (convert from Marshall) but have yet to get the cab, primarily because the shop didn't have a roadking 4x12 available only a recto 4x12. Anyone like to offer some advice - should I wait 6 weeks or so for a roadking cab or just go for the recto 4x12. The range of music I play is pretty diverse so I'll liked the idea of the semi open back of the RK Cab for the cleans, thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

YEa I am having the same problem between what I believe is a stiletto 4x12 and a rectifier cab.

Sorry I cant offer any opinion but I ask the same question. What is the best cab for the roadking?

The Roadking cab is best paired with a Roadking because no other amp can fully utilize its features of open and closed back. THe closed back side is akin to the recto cab.

The Recto cab, aka the Oversized, has a closed back and offers a very deep, bassy, sound. Consider it useful for nu-metal and other heavy styles.

The Stilleto cab, formerly the Traditional cab, is also closed back but is smaller in size. This makes it great for classic rock and speed metal type music where a tighter bass response is necessary.

OK cool, thanks for the overview...

What my question is....how much better are the RK cabs with the clean channels? AND what speakers on the RK cab are best suited for Mic'ing?

If you want AMAZING cleans, go with the RK cab. I've owned the Rk412 and it's amazing but I wound up switching to a Recto 212 for a variety of reasons...But I've played my pal's RK through my old cab and I don't think there's a better match for it.

On the subject of these cabs: I have a RKII combo and I've pondered a few things. Can I run the combo speakers and a RK4x12 at the same time? Also, can I run a Recto 2x12 and a 4x12 rk at the same through the rkII?

Yes to both. I'm guessing the combo speaker is an 8ohm speaker, so when you want to run that speaker + another cab, plug each cab into one of the two 4ohm speaker jacks, and leave the 8ohm ones empty.

Then, if you want 2 cabs (if they are both 8ohm), then just unplug the combo speaker, and plug each cab into the two 4ohm speaker jacks.

Road King 4x12 is a 4ohm load if you just run all 4 speakers. You're not going to be able to run that with another cab/speaker and keep the load above 4ohm. The 4x12 Road King has 3 inputs on the back, one 8ohm load for each pair and a 4ohm load to run all 4. You could run a pair of the speakers at 8ohm with another cab and not have an issue, but not all 4 in the road king and another cab. Also, the road king 4x12 does not have an output to chain another cab, just the 3 inputs. The recto 2x12 is 8ohm and I'm assuming the internal speaker is as well. Running either with the Road King 4x12 would give you a load of about 2.7ohms, which would be bad.

And back to the OP, the Road King 4x12 is currently my favorite cab. I have a 4x12 traditional (now stilleto) and a 2x12 oversized and they don't compare, IMO. I don't even have a Road King amplifier, I use the cab with my Mark III and a Diezel Herbert. I love all 3 cabs for different reasons, but the Road King sounds big like an oversized (though not as boomy/bassy), tight like a stilleto and a brightness (not overly bright though) and clarity that none of them have. That's why it's my favorite. For recording, I actually mix 3 mics. 1 mic on an mc-90, 1 mic on a V30 and one mic behind the cab on on the open side. If it were me, I'd wait for the Road King cab.

Guys,

Thanks for your advice, I've just ordered the Roadking 412 slant, I'll let you know how I get on.

2 questions...

1. Piers...what did ya pay for that RK cab? I got a quote of 950.00 at GC.

2. How would one mic' the RK in a LIVE situation? Thats my questions and good mornin'

If the sound guy won't setup 2 mics (most I know look at you like you're on crack if you even ask), I usually mic the V30. The V30 by itself is not my favorite sound, but in a band mix it sounds very good. It's got more mids and low end than the MC-90. The MC-90 is brighter and didn't quite have the growl I like for rhythm parts, though it sounds good for soloing. This is just my experience and preferences, so YMMV.

Yep that's what I paid (assuming you're talking dollars).

I'm thinking about using a roadking head run into a rk 2x12 cab with a rectifier 2x12 cab?

Unless you only run one side of the Road King 2x12, you're going to get a resistance of just under 3ohms when you link the cabs together. That would not be good for the head. You could run head -> recto > 1 side of the road king and get a 4ohm load which would be fine, but if you're running the recto cab into both speakers in the road king cab, you run the risk of hurting the amplifier.
