Had the same issue, drove me completely nuts. Changed V1 & the gain mysteriously reappeared.

Where is the V1 located on this? That's the one most responsible for that "crunch" right? Thanks///

Mesa is sending me out a tube kit that contains some extra preamp tubes. He also mentioned that the Chinese made tubes are a bit crisper than the Russian made ones. I am going to experiment changing them out and see what results I get.

Closest to the transformer I believe.

Thanks, yeah it's one that is hard to get too, hidden behind the transformer so I will have to remove the board to reach it.
