hello to everybody. I don't want to start a battle with this topic but I need to do the better thing in chosing the tubes for my 290.

I contacted a vendor which replied with a sort of explanation about different attitude by various tube types.

Hello-

Ruby Tubes does not make tubes, they simply relabel cheap Chinese and Russian tubes. Most Chinese and Russian tubes have a flabby, boomy low end, a harsh cardboard like midrange and a very shrill and brittle high end. When they distort they are not smooth they are very hairy and grainy. The JJ Electronic tubes in contrast are very linear tubes which allows your EQ to respond more like it should. They have a deep, tight low end, a natural and harmonically rich mid and a sweet high end with a nice sparkle. The JJ tubes overall are very smooth with a lot of detail so there is quite a difference.
I would suggest going with all 6L6GC’s unless you’d like to add some British midrange complexity to your tone.
Here is how the JJ EL34 family shapes up:
The standard JJ EL34 is just like the old European EL34's. These are a bit soft with a shallower low end and a smooth breakup with a nice crunch, a typical high quality EL34. Standard EL34 tubes are not real tight and are known for a slightly looser feel.
The JJ E34L's provide a deeper low end and are more aggressive and punchy than an EL34. The E34L is tighter with slightly more headroom and power with a more aggressive crunch, a very articulate British tone.
The JJ KT77's have even a bit more low end extension than the JJ E34L's and they have a nice sizzle in the top end that is not brittle. The clean tone is very fat and full and the crunch at loud volumes has more of a chunk to it. It's very punchy but not quite as aggressive as the E34L.They are a great tube for rhythm and solo work if you like the pushed mid and upper mid tone that all EL34 type tubes have.
The JJ Big Bottle 6CA7 is as close as you can get to mixing a 6L6 with an EL34. The low end is big and round like a 6L6 and the mids are more like an EL34 but not quite a bright. These are great sounding tubes and especially nice if you're trying to tame down the highs and beef up the lows and low mids.
So for a comparison the JJ 6L6GC's have a little more low end than the KT77's, but are a cleaner tube with a later breakup and they are not as midrange heavy, more of a traditional Fender type tone. The 6L6GC's are a better way to go if you scoop your mids to any degree and these are a great tube for heavy rhythm and or melodic drop tuned Metal. They will also give the fattest and most linear full spectrum sound of all the small bottle octal tubes which also makes them a great tube for just about anything from Rock to Jazz to Country.
For the front end I use three of the JJ ECC83S preamp tubes that are matched and balanced because they are used as drivers and phase inverters. The JJ's have a very deep tight low end, a natural harmonically rich mid and a smooth sweet high end with a nice sparkle that's not brittle.

please note that Ruby are the tubes I now have. besides, note that I'm in no way linked to JJ tubes. I just pasted what I got.

it looks like a good explanation to me but instead of helping me it got more choices thus letting me have more doubts.

any comment on it? anyone got experience with this kind of tubes? consider that this guy offered both combination 6L6/EL34 and 6L6 alone.

all the best

michael

could be since the guy mentions only JJs.

anyways, EL34, 6L6, KT77 can be found with several brands: we are not obliged to buy JJs, right?.

so, let's forget for a moment the JJ thing and discuss the readers opinion on the tubes type features that this guy says.

An integrated set of EL34 and 6L6 gets my vote.... And since I prefer them, not only for the awesome sound but also for the price/quality ratio when compared to the vaunted SED Winged =C= (especially over here in Europe. Unlike in the US, where a matched pair of =C= 6L6GCs goes for ~70$, here in Germany the price for 1 =C= 6L6GC is ~62,50$...):
TungSol 6L6GC-STR and TungSol EL34B....yummie 8)
(the small bottles are Tube-Town E83CC....)

JJ... linear... sure...

Did you contact Eurotubes perhaps? Then just disregard that mail. I just don't drink the Bob Kool Aid because all he wants is to sell his precious JJs.

=C='s get my vote but like Triaxstasy stated they are expensive - TungSol are the alternative to go with though.

Can the 2:90 accept a mixed EL34/6L6 load? I know my 2:95 can, but I haven't thought of retubing my 2:90 yet. I think the 2:95 sounds incredible with the combination installed.

Yes, it can. This was confirmed a couple of time by Mesa as well (Tien Lawrence sent me a mail confirming that EL34/6L6 is a go....). Just make sure to put the EL34 in the ClassA sockets...sounds KILLER!

ok. great. thanks a 1000 to all for your comment and help. I thought about it, the combo el34/6l6.......which is by now the first choice.

and yes.........this is a comment by eurotubes but as mentioned, no one is obliged to buy from anyone............a good advice is more than welcome from everyone thought, right?

any other comment is more than welcome............

in the meantime I will research a bit more..........

Of course Bob says JJ's are the ****. That's ALL he sells!
I have Ruby BHT EL34's in an amp right now and they flat out clobber the JJ EL34L's that they replaced in every way.

hi Ryjan,
of course I have nothing to say about the rubys. I am enquiring to check if I can get an improvement in mixing tubes. right now I have 6l6..........the brand I don't really care as long as it is a reliable one..........

You mean mixing EL34's and 6L6's?
I never tried it when I had a 2:90 but it was by far my favorite combination in my Mark IV.

I definitely want to do this. I just got a 2:90 and it hasn't been retubed in awhile so I'm going to do it soon. I can't tell by the manual, how do you know which sockets are Class A and which aren't? Can you tell by just looking at them?

Cool thanks a ton! I have the version with the blue light so the different pics help.

FWIW I have had nothing but good experiences with Eurotubes and after trying Winged C's and the Ruby EL34Bstr think the JJE34L is just as good. Just slightly different flavors that you only notice if your actually getting the volume up pretty loud. Preamp tubes is very trial by error though and I recommend get a few from different brands and swap them until you like the tone. My EL34 experience is from using them in a Plexi Marshall so I'm definitely hearing what effect the Power tubes have on the tone. I would use the JJ's anytime and their price is kick ass. I also have a Stiletto and when requesting some E34L's that would bias correctly in the amp, the set they sent me biased perfectly in the same range, almost exactly as the original Mesa tubes. I've got the Ruby's in the plexi (metro kit I built) now which followed a set of winged C's which followed a set of JJ's (original to the amp). Never changed because of tone chasing, just out of mild curiosity. The difference in tone has been extremely minimal. My next set will be back to the JJ's probably as the Ruby's really stretch out the tube socket (bigger pins). Unfortunately I don't have enough experience with 6L6's to offer an opinion there.

+1 EL34/6L6 combo, I have these in my 295 and it sounds great, I see no reason why it wouldn't be great in the 2:90 and I will likely put them in my 2:90 next time around.
I use Mesa Boogie brand tubes but whatever works for ya.

So I just re-tubed mine with the EL34/6L6 combo (all Ruby's) following the diagram earlier in this thread for the blue light version. (Thank you for posting that btw!) Sounds flat out amazing.

So I already got my triaxis and my 2:90 is on the way (Blue bulb in front).. I bought it used and I think it may need retubing.. Now I have a matched quad of Tad 6l6GCs and a matched quad of sovtek 5881, I know the 5881s are 25 watts (Same like the EL34s I guess) compared to 6l6GC 30 watts.. can I put 2 of the 5881 tubes in the outer sockets of each channel instead of having 1 channel with the 6l6GCs and other with the 5881s??
What about the 6550 and KT88 tubes can i install any of them in the 2:90?? or combine both??
