I have a 1977 MXR Distortion+ box that I've owned since it was new. Now, 32 years later, the foam has deteriorated into a sticky, crumbly mess. Does anybody have suggestions for cleaning that out of the box? I took a dry old toothbrush and removed it all from the inside of the back cover; and I also gently brushed off the component side of the circuit board. Getting the gunk out of the inside might be another matter, though. What can I use to replace the foam? Obviously I don't want conductive anti-static foam. Maybe corrugated cardboard? I'm thinking that the major purpose of the foam was to hold the board in place, provide electrical insulation between the board and the metal of the box, and holding the 9V battery in place.
Any ideas are appreciated, and no, it's not for sale. 8)
