rectoverb for metal

In my experience, Rectoverb combos are really awesome, but 50w rectifier heads have never had that same "mojo" that Dual/Triple Recs possess.

I would snag the Rectoverb. It does metal very well. If you are indeed getting it at a "very fair price," you should be able to sell it for what you paid or at a minimal loss if you end up not liking it.

If you can get the Rectoverb at a really good price, snag it. I've owned both the Rectoverb and Roadster. They're both great amps, but if cash is a major factor, and your main genre is metal, the Rectoverb is quite a bargain. The Roadster is an amazing amp, but if you're just looking for the basic Recto high gain sound, the Rectoverb will serve you fine. Don't worry about the "But it's only 50 watts!" factor either....my 100 watt Marshall stack using friends were usually asking ME to turn down the Rectoverb 1x12 combo.

I just want to echo the majority here and say a Rectoverb is capable of some insanely heavy metal tones. Red Channel/Modern IS metal, no matter the various recto models. The only reason I'd sell my rectoverb is to get a Roadster or RK, but that's because of the added versitility, not for lack of tone.

The RoV lacks the variac option and also the tube rectifier, but for tight metal tones you more than likely wouldn't use those as they make the amp very loose. Cool for leads and lower gain stuff though. The 50watt power section is plenty loud. Hell, my old F-30 could keep up with a band quite easily and that had half the wattage as my RoV.

The Roadster, Dual Rec, and ROV are all great amps. I'f your looking for versitility I'd go with the Roadster. If you do not think you'll use the variac, Tube Rectification, Footswitchable loop, I'd go with the ROV. All of these amps have a looser feel. Using El34's and boosting them with a good OD get's a very tight metal sound. The cab you use will effect this too.

The DR and Roadster being 100 w have a little more bass response BTW.

I'd boil it down to the options your looking for. They're all great.

the rectoverb works very good for metal. it is a great amp. 50 watts mesa is more than ehough I promise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the answers... i can get a combo for around 600 used with new tubes and some spare tubes... my concern was if it would be worth it considering i am looking at a roadster or mark v (wishful thinking, but by the time i decide, it might be out)

IMO the RoV is one of Mesa's finest amps! It's everything you need and nothing you don't. Very simplistic with plenty of versatility and power. It can definitely do Metal! And for $600 I say don't hesitate ANY LONGER! The Roadster and (future) Mark V both go for almost 3 times that much. Out of all my Mesas i've owned I kept the RoV for the longest. LOL. It is a killer amp! You could make money on it if you decide you don't like it and end up selling it!

That price is almost too good to pass up. I'd snag it.

If nothing else it will give you some exposure to the rectifier line. Most combos go around $800.

Freshly tubed ROV for 600 bucks???
Seriously, you'll have a really hard time finding a better all-around amp for that kind of price, man. I gave 900 for mine and have never regretted it.
Matter of fact, I recently traded MY ROV to a guy straight up for a mid 90's Dual Rec head, and I'm already missing the ROV a little.
(not that the DR isn't badass, but the ROV definately had a special place in my heart...)

Hell yes the recto verb does metal, I own the 112 combo and used to own a 2 channel dual, the secret is a maxon od 808.
People that say the dual is heavier sounding are full of it, I actually like the single recto better because u can push the tubes to saturation easier. Get a used 212 ext cab and its sick. Single rectos are a little simpler less bells and whistles so I can gurantee that it will outlast a roadster for reliability.
If I was playing big clubs I might think about the dual with a 412 but honestly how many people actually play to 1000 people all of the time.

Trust me the modern voicing through v30 cab is identical to a dual.

the recto verb/single recto is actually tighter than the dual. but more bright sounding.
If you were up for a dual the roadster would be the choice that is tight as the single/rectoverb

I have two options right now on ebay- 1 single rec solo head or a combo rectoverb

Both for around the same price. All i want out of either of them is straight brutal metal. that's it. numetal, old metal, JUST METAL. What's the best option ? I like the 50watt because I want to play at lower volumes, I already have a Mark IV for everything else.


What do you guys think would be the better option?

th 2 amps you are talking about are not for lower volume. they are loud!!!!! and screming metal. go for the head
