Worth it? Thinking about getting a 5150 for backup and to goof around with in stereo. I primarily play metal.

I have a Road King II, Maxon OD808, Fulltone OCD and a Mills 4x12 and a Mesa 4x12 (pic link in sig) so I already have another cab for it. I hear that the OD808 is a popular boost for 5150s too (a la Killswitch Engage, Parkway Drive), so I'm thinking this may be a winner.

Other amps I've given thought to are the Framus Cobra, Splawn Nitro, and the ENGL Powerball II, to name a few. The problem with these is they all cost more than double the price of a used 5150, but I could hold off if I really thought it were worthwhile.

Definetely a good match. I know few bands in our country that play through recto and 5150 combination. They mix really well. We use this combo in my band too...well sort of. I play through Triple recto and my bandmate through Bugera 6260 (which is 5150 ripoff). Awesome sound and we never had problem to set kickass sound live in really short time.
One of bands that rehearse in same building as us uses the same combination you want to. Roadking and 5150 and their sound is brutal. They play hardcore.
Haven`t heard those other amps combined with recto. I haven`t even heard Cobra and Nitro live so I can`t speak for those. As for Engl I heard powerball 1 few times and I never liked it, but last time I heard it through recto cab it kicked ass, in clean department and also distortion was awesome. Inwas surprised to say the least. The gain was set to 2/10 and it already was super higain brutal sound, but sounded good, so I guess those few times I heard it before, guys probably overdid it with gain. I really don`t understand why did they put so much gain into it. I think that more than half is unusable for any application, even the most burtal of brutal death metal. But who knows how that would sound with recto. I would definetely like to try splawn though...I know they make marshall clones that are beastly modded. That could compliment rectifiers really well. I also heard only good things about framus cobra amps.
But yeah as you said all those amps are really expensive compared to 5150, so if you have a chance to try them than do it and see if you like any of them. If you don`t, you can`t go wrong with 5150 because it is a kickass match with recto (besides 5150 and Recto are probably 2 most famous amps when you think metal tone)
I really haven`t heard those other amps, so hopefully somebody could tell you more.

Anytime you can get a hold of a 5150, it's a good thing.

For a very brief time I had a 5150II and my Recto. Played together it was like being drop kicked by a bull. Seriously one of the best metal amps ever made.

My band recorded our newest EP with a blend of triple rec and a 6505. The tone we got was huge! You can check out the tone if you want from the link in my sig. The amount of low end is emense but not muddy!

My old rig was a 5150II and a Triple Rec. Sounded good together. They both have a unique gain structure and they blend well together. I have heard that the 5150 is a tad more aggressive than the II. They are both good metal amps, cleans are pretty terrible though  .

I use a Tverb and a 5150 (well I did. just sold my 5150 last week  ). Its a killer match. 5150s are great amps. the rectos and the 5150s have different strengths than each other. Put them together and its almost the perfect amp IMO. The 5150 also pairs great with my Mark III as well. both are middy amps but in different ranges. They sound huge together. Same with the 5150 and the recto. I like the tverb on modern. So the scooped recto tone and the mid heavy 5150 tone is awesome together.

+1

The 5150 and Rectos seem to be made for each other! Any band i know that uses them together live just has such a huge sound without it being muddy or unclear

i use a recto with EL34s and the other guitar player in my band uses a 6534 wich a 5150/6505 with EL34s and they sound really good together, we get very good comments about how the guitars sound in our live shows

i have a 6505+ at my rehearsal room at the moment to check the amp out.
hooked it up in parallel with my roadster and i was blown away! it´s an awesome combination. the growling low-end of the roadster with its nice top-end and the 6505+ with its raw mids and this accurate attack.
very brutal and cool sound but both amps together are to loud for a normal rehearsal. :D
