Rectifier - Power Tube Distortion

Hello,
I've been wanting to play around with different sounds available in my Triple Rec. Today, I decided I would try to get a classic rock distortion using the red channel with the gain low, and the amp cranked into a pretty good amount of power tube distortion (LOUD!!!!). Anyway, I've got Ruby 6L6s in it and am not loving them. How are EL34s? I've heard they've got more of a midrange growl, which I guess is what I'm looking for.

I may as well ask...has anyone gotten a good sound in any amp when distorting 6L6s? I tried in a Fender Deluxe, too, and hated it...

As a general rule, EL-34's break up earlier than 6L6's, which is part of how Marshall's get that distictive power-stage overdrive...
