My and my son have been trying to record tidbits to try and come up with something for the Hockey Night in Canada contest (make a new theme song).

I spent more time trying to get my PC to record something than playing. I tried thru the POD XT live via USB on 3 of my PCs, all of them sound like crap. I think it's an issue with USB1 vs USB 2.0 (all my PCs are new). I tried on my "hackintosh", was much better but had latency issues.

Believe it or not, to achieve what I wanted, we ended up using the "XBOX 360 Rock Band" microphone and the Sound Recorder from windows XP.

Man... Would getting an interface fix all this or am I throwing money out the window? This is frustrating!

I don't really know where to begin here, but yes an interface will help out alot. Do you have a DAW? I'm not familiar with the POD XT, but latency can be adjusted with a buffer. Does the software that came with the POD have a buffer function? Give me more information and I'll try to help, and others will help to obviously.

I don't even know what a DAW is... The POD XT Live has a USB connection, so i figured it would be an easy task. From what I read online, I'm not the online with the issue. When recording, the sound from the POD is garbled and it pops and crackles all over the place. There is no software that comes with it, I used Guitar Tracks Pro, audacity etc... I was using an M-Audio Revolution sound card on that PC, I tried changing it for a Soundblaster X-Fi I had on hand and same result. I think it has nothing to do with the PC's config, more with the POD XT itself. I was thinking of using an interface or simply putting a mike in front of the amp...

DAW is short for Digital Audio Workstation such as Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, etc... If you use a microphone your still going to have to get it transfered into your computer somehow. Just get an interface and you'll be fine. Before I bought an interface, recording into my computer was basically pointless. It sounds ridiculously bad.

... why not?

i use the podxt only to put some effects like reverb or delay, chorus, flanger etc to the dry sound - its also a true instrument to reproduce already well known sounds (type in the song/interpret and receive the soundsetup via internet) but it has other nice features as well.

to record into the pc there should be an analog/digital interface like the line 6 toneport or any other device (there are thousands to choose from)

on the software side prepare some sequencer/recording program like sonar, cubase or any other to record and track your sounds realtime to the pc and add new recordings to already recorded tracks

i found it also helpful to work with a small external mixer (mackie, behringer, tapco, etc) to adjust the microphones (yes, without the guitarsound is just crap) and to organise the playback and subroutines.

with this - i call it - minimum setup and some practice you should have satisfying HiFi sounds on your DAW/homerecording station on hand.

good luck (don't waste too much money on trying new gear ;-)

That's why I'm trying to get advice on a good interface... I've found this one so far that seems reliable: Echo Audiofire 4. I didn't buy it yet, can't find it anywhere in stock. Good sign? Bad sign?

clear - why don't you go for a small 8 line mixer with integrated interface, there are many available with attractive prices. behringer, mackie, yamaha, phoenix ...

e.g.

your rockstar can also record vocals and guitar at once, but later mix on seperate tracks.

rock on ;-)
