Can anyone help me out, I'd like to hear a clip with a rec with el34s in it. Does it tighten up the sound?

Yes it tightens it up, but does not boost the low ends like 6L6's do. I just put EL34's in my Recto and will never go back to 6L6's. They have a low end that is just to flabby and loose to my ears. The EL34's are more focused.

Do what I did and order a Quad set of Electro-Harmonix El34's for $40 on eBay to try them out. Then if you like them, get the better more expensive tubes. If not, you are only out $40 ya know? And here's a few vids from YouTube....

all the songs on my band's myspace were recorded with a 2 channels DR loaded with El34's + an OD and a noïse gate in front.

next album will be done with my two pre-500, can't wait...

Is it true that you have to get the amp re bias'ed if you put anything other that mesa brand tubes?

I heard that from someone but I was not sure if this is correct.

For many years i have been using non Mesa EL34s and never rebiased any of my Drs, but i don't know if they would work even better if i did so ??? Someone knows the answer ???

The problem is that in order to rebias, you must change a resistor. There is no potentiometer to adjust (unless you add one).

I added a pot to mine so I can use any type of tube.

Since its a fixed Bias, when i order tubes I just specify they are going into a Recto and to have the company or whoever select the tubes that are in the correct range. Just fit the tubes to the amp as opossed to the amp to the tubes ya know?
