Do you find that the maple top on the customs really makes a tone difference? I understand that flames and quilts obviously require a maple top, but tonaly speaking do you think it matters?

I dont think its made a difference in my Gibson comparisons, only the type of woo and thickness really resulted in anything sonic.

A maple top DOES make a difference in tone with any body wood, whether it be alder, basswood, Mahogany, etc. On certain woods it can be overkill, such as maple on swamp ash.
