I play Hardrock-to metal. I like chunk.
I like to hear my mids. Im looking for
my cake and eat it to--which I believe
shouldnt be too much to ask considering
that I forked out the money for this
great amp. Ive tried a few different
pickups and I like these dragons for
their versatility but I find it doesnt
leave me much to hold onto in the
mids department and ultimatly
doesnt dive me the tight chunk I
need to play the riffs I hear in my
head. I hate to keep dropping money
on pickups if they arent going to do
what I want them to, and of course
if my change is right there in the knobs
--I'd much rather do that than fork out
more money. These PU's have allot
of bottom end in them so I find that
if I give them more than a quarter
of the bass on the dial, my harmonics
are gone with the wind and I in turn
have no mids. The treble is an interesting
creature as well.
heres how I have the knobs set

Vintage High Gain/Bold/Solid State

Below settings are under the assumption
that 6 is all the way up and 7 is off on the
tone control :D

Overall Amp Volume:
6 O'clock(given that 6 is all the way up)
Channel Master Volume:
7-8 O'clock(maybe! its very loud
@ the above setting!!
But tonally its very sustain-y!)
Presence:
11:30 O'clock to 6 O'clock
(depends on the song/if i can hear myself)
Gain:
2-3 O'clock
Bass:
7-9 O'clock
Mids:
9:30 to 11 O'clock
Treble:
1-2:30 O'clock

Suggestions PLEASE!!

I'm a little confused by your settings....when you say 6 and then say 11:30........or say 6 all the way up, but then say 7-8 master....Can you edit your post so they're all in clock hour:minute format?

All of the above tone knob positionings are clockwise just to clarify--

There--that should be easier to read also with the clock
designation and the shortened margins

Try these settings....it gets rid of the harshness and really adds some mids to the tone!

Channel 3: Modern
Tube Rectifier
Bold

Presence: 10 o'clock
Master: 11 o' clock
Gain: 2 o'clock
Bass: 12 o'clock
Mids: 2 o'clock
Treble: 10 o'clock

this is for : ibanez4life SZ!

What about pickups? Are you using a JB
with those settings? I saw on some
of your other postings that you were
complimenting a PRS Tremonti--is that what
you are using with these settings? :?:

I ditched my Dragon II bridge for a Tremonti bridge because I had the same problem... however, I LOVE the Dragon II neck, one of my favorite pickups ever.

ok, now I understand it perfectly. thanks...

As for suggestions,
First I personally would scratch all the settings and start again. You are varying too widely by having bass almost off, gain way up and the volumes differing as well. set everything in the middle. Bypass loop. Put channel volume on at least 9:30 or 10:00. The vintage channel is kinda dark so up your presence around 1:30-2:00, maybe more, but it may sizzle. Bass will give you the chunk. Put this at 11-1:30. Keep your mids in relation to bass knob. If you up the bass a lot, say 2, you got to up your mids a few notches as well, else you got zippooo! Treble is a great knob...put her around 12-2. Gain, start off at 12. Don't go over 2:30 or 3. I suggest keeping it around 1:30 or 2. The rectos sweet spot is within this the 11-3 range for each knob. I wouldn't venture far off from here unless you want a very specific sound. By having you bass around where i told and keeping mids in relation, you'll have chunk and enough mids to cut.

If you ever choose to use the overall volume master, put your channel volume up more and then you adjust the overall volume knob.

Thanks for all of the suggestions thus far!! I will try the setting suggestions tonight!! Much appreciated!! :!:

What are you playing guitar/amp that you expirienced the same effects with the Dragon 2 bridge? I also love the neck PU! Did you have any mismatch problems with the difering outputs?

It just couldn't get dirty enough for what I wanted it for. It was in my PRS Custom 22. The neck pickup was great and has awesome girth and balls, the treble was way too flubby and not articulate at all.

You haven't tried the HFS vs Tremonti pickups have you? I have been thinking of replacing the HFS treble pickup in my Custom 24 with the Tremonti pickup I have laying around. They seem sort of similar in clips I've heard.

I tried an HFS one time in a store but I have not ever
had a chance to try a tremonti--I hear the Tremonti's
are very nice sounding but since I have not had the
oportunity to try one I have a hard time spending
$120 for one blindly!! And I dont ever see them on
ebay-- I got the pair of Dragon II's on ebay for $160
new in the box and uninstalled. That was a good deal
for me but I might be looking for a little more scream
in the bridge if the tone setting suggestions listed above
for me tonight!! I just dont seem to be able to get enough
tight huge chunk with the clarity of the mids--

Stay far away from the HFS, terrible pickup in my opinion.

Definatly--but you suggest the Tremonti?? What
about a Dimarzio Super 3 DP152? Any
really good matches for Metal/Hard stuff
through the recto anyone??

I like the Tremonti and others might disagree but I wouldn't call it a metal pickup by any means. It is high output for sure and very hard rock oriented but my EMG actives slaughter it for metal. The Tremonti is great for hard rock stuff, has a great hifi sound but there is a midscoop inherently so watch out for that.

My settings are with the Tremonti's....I no longer have the JB, and thank god!
I forgot to change the pups in my sig....lol! Sorry about that!

But give the settings a try! When pushing the amp, it does exactly what you're looking for. It chugs, but has the mids to really cut through also!

Apreciate the suggestions guys!!---Anyone try a Dragon II and also try a Tremonti? What kind of difference would I notice right off the bat? What kind of a an eq change would I see??

I've had both in my guitar. The Dragon II is more vintage voiced, has much less gain, more midrange than the Tremonti but far less treble and bass. The Tremonti has a much more focused bass response and lets those chords sound huge through a recto cab. The Dragon II picked up very few harmonics but with the Tremonti you can pinch with ease.

How Fast would you say the bottom end was--like for quick chunky riffs?
