possible to mod ch2 for more gain?

Hi All, new to the board and have had my MV for about 3 months. I love ch3 for lead but not so much for rythym as I would need to tweak knobs. So I'm using ch2 for rythym and it sounds pretty good but a touch short on gain. I'm not really a fan of OD pedals as I don't want to have to loop it or do the river dance when switching patches. I'm wondering if there is a way to get more gain out of ch2 by changing components.

Really? Wow, in Mark 1 mode I find channel 2 has gobs of gain. It has been said on this forum (and in the manual I think) that Channel 2 in Mark 1 mode has as much gain on tap as the channel 3 modes.

I was playing with Mark 1 mode yesterday, with the gain around 9:00 as recommended by some here, and I thought that was plenty (mind you, I'm more of a classic rock / early 80s metal guy).

Or do you specifically want more gain in Crunch mode, for example?

I understand wanting more gain on crunch mode if using it for main rhythms.... it was one of the 1st mods i wanted done to my V.... but never got round to it. Mark 1 mode is useless without the graphic eq which means no geq for ch3.

What you want can certainly be done. Just take it to a competent amp tech

Well, i'm doing it the other way.
Ch 3 for rythm and Ch 2 for leads.... ch 3 with preset, ch 2 with sliders, bass 0, gain almost max, presence almost max.
I just wish the reverb on Ch 2 was more like on ch 3!! and that this ch could be more of a screamer!!
if ch 2 was the engl Screamer this was perfect!!! I like screaming highs for leads, almost as it could cut your eardrums!

Sorry, I should have specified the crunch mode. And yes I'm playing 80's type metal. I will take another look at mode 1, ch2 if that has more gain, that was not my impression but I've kinda set it and forgot it since I first was tinkering. Had band practice last night and was using channel 3 for both rythym and lead and it was not too bad but would be nice to have ch2 working for me.

So I'm in the process of building a Ceriatone OTS kit amp and If someone could point me in the right direction I could probably do the mod for CH2 increased gain on the MV myself. I'm trained in electronics but not so much in amps so am learning as I go here. Maybe another discussion group out there that is geared more towards amp modding?

I'm another one that's using Ch 3 (Mark IV) for rhythm and Ch 2 (Mark I) for lead. I also use the preset EQ on channel 3 and the sliders on channel 2.

I prefer the preset to the graphic as the preset seems to be able to dial in some really punch/present sounding rhythm sounds. It's a little hard on the ears when jamming at home, but it works well with the rest of the band.

Ch2/Mark I, Treble/presence way up, mids in the middle somewhere and bass basically off... just like an old Mark. I have quite zeroed in on my ideal lead tone, but it's getting there.

One trick I've found is that if you're going to use the graphic EQ it helps to cut the 240Hz more than the 750Hz.

I suggest you try crunch mode increasing treble to about 3:00, gain almost maxed, presence at 10:00, bass around 10:00, mids at noon, with the same slider eq you use in ch3; with relatively high output pickups you should have plenty of gain - a Seymour Duncan JB gets you to metal terrain with that settings.

For what I want to do, I agree woth others here - MK1 is awsome and has more gain on tap than I can usefully use, but you do need to use the EQ section to get your sound

This is exactly what I was going to recommend. I've used a low gain 12AT7 in V2 to bring the gain down and smooth out CH2 before (with my first V) so the opposite can be achieved with a high gain 12AX7 in V2. If you put one in V1 you will get more gain in all channels I believe.

Thanks everyone. I will try increasing the treble and decreasing presence to see if that gets better. If I do decide to change the V2 preamp tube, will that affect the CH1 & CH3?

No. Have a look at the tube task chart in the back of the manual for a break down of what each tube slot is doing.
