You may want to try changing preamp tubes to see if you get any improvement.

I recently tried to change V1 on my MkIV and noticed that it not only sounded different, it also WORKED different. For example, with the *new* tube the presence controls did almost nothing (0 to 10 almost same tone), while they work pretty well with the *old* tube.

Maybe that may solve your little problem.

Hummm,I don't have a problem with my Mark IV's tones sounding too compressed..
I myself keep the gain down a bit more than normal to get more chord defination outta it then i use my BB Preamp for the extra bump(it seems to round out the tone even more)

ESP KH 602= Bright, clearer, more aggresive
Schecter C-7 Hellraiser= Darker, meaty-er, punchy

Very different and they both have active EMG pups. Are you sure you're woods aren't the same? Also, if you're using tons of gain, that can contribute to them sounding similar I guess.
