Enjoying the Mk V, playing about 1 hr per night and playing out occasionally. Just wondering how my sound (such as it is) will change if I move to an open back cabinet say a single speaker 23" Atlantic cabinet over the tight, bassy horizontal dual rectifier cab?

I'd expect the sound to get a bit "lighter" and "looser". However not even sure what these words mean in this context. i guess I'd expect the mids to come through a bit more, maybe with a bit more note articulation on chords. Is that correct?

I tried the open back transatlantic cabinet and it was VERY trebly/ice-picky. i returned it, got the rectifier 2x12 closed back and it is much better.

I for one have been thinking my horizontal 2x12 rectifier cab is too bassy.

It's like I have to keep the bass super low on all channels, even the Edge mode. I've adjusted the pickups and everything. I think I just might need an open back cab for my blues, rock and roll, pop playing?

Remove the rear casters and leave the front ones on. It tilts back the cab so you can hear more top end.

The Royal Atlantic 112 cab (27") is great with a Mark V. That's what I use with mine most of the time. The 212 RA cab is also great, same size as the 112 but a little heavier. It also comes down to which speakers you like between the C90 and V30s. I tried a V30 in my RA 112 for a while but went back to the C90 because I liked it better with the MKV for most things.

One other thing, the C90 and V30 speakers take a bit of playing to break in, so don't ever judge these cabs by how they sound brand new. Every time I plug into a new Mesa cab in the store they sound harsh and "ice picky" compared to my broken in cabs at home.

IMO the MV likes C90s (or Emi Delta Pros, or EV12Ls) much more than V30s

Interesting idea. Have to try it sometime. Not really a possibility for me these days as I have nowhere to put the head except on top of the cab.

On a side note, has anyone else had to raise the Mark V a little when resting it on the horizontal recto cab? The metal plate on the left side of my MV was rattling against the handle on the cab.

Hi, everyone!
I searched for some info about open vs. closed cabs and found this topic.
I own a Triple Rectifier and one Traditional and one Standard cabs.
By accident, I came across an interesting video on YouTube where the guy demonstrates the difference between the two (and very well at that, in my opinion).
If anyone is interested, here's the link: http://youtu.be/STaL-wMlbds
I'd like to try the open back cab tone as I seem to like it better than the closed back sound in that video. I can't seem to find any Mesa 4x12 open back cabs on the site. And I can't seem to find such cabs from other brands either (!).
Is it a crazy idea to remove the back panel? That would definitely save me some bucks haha
