Newbie advice Dual Rectifier Solo Head 2 channel good head?

Hello all I am new to the board and wondered what a Dual Rect. Solo Head is worth. I have always wanted a Mesa and a fellow has one for sale. Seems to be in good condition. This head has an aluminum bar accross the back. And I am gonna go test drive it tommorow, and was wondering what I should look for and is this a good head for metal. I play Metal. They seem to go for around $700-$1000.
Check for scratchy pots and just the general condition of the amp.
