Hi,
I'm new to this Board(first time)
I just brought a Roadking 1/2 stack and was hoping to get some cool settings from super Clean to Plexi to Mark IV to Petrucci tones.
I'm a Heavy Prog guitarist and this Amp is new to me so I was hoping to hear from some of you who already have this setup

anyone can send me there input.
Thx,richb

Here's a good place to start looking.
Sorry I can't be any more helpful, I own a Roadster. Not much difference, but probably enough.

When you have the roadking you must think Like the artist you are going after. For example. When wanting a rockabilly tone, go to ch 1, recto tubes, on vintage spongy, tweed, 2 6l6's and you emulating a 40-50 watt bassman, use the open back speakers on the road king cab and you are halfway there (fingers have to do the rest). Oh yeah. a gretsch guitar and some slapback echo helps to nail this tone. Beatles? go to ch 2. brit , 2 el 34's, open back again, and a gretsch will do the job. Malmsteen?, Beck?, they both used 50 watt amps most of the time, run 2 6l6's or 2 el34's and crank the out put, keep the master between 11 and 1 oclock, vintage mode, the amp will break up real fast and give great roar and singing leads.Remember to believe in what you are doing and think that you are actually cranking a 50watter, cauz, surprise you actually are. want absolutely crushing tone, a real acdc crunch of crunches, go to ch 4, go to diode rectifier, modern mode, 2 6l6's and 2 el 34's, now we are at about a 100 watts like heads used by angus, use both the open and closed speakers on the 4x12 roadking (why use any other cab? this is custom for the RK) this will give you an even more awe-inspiring blast than a 100 watt marshall. try it, but give it some juice, it will astonish you. Do not think rectifier, until you want rectifier tone, then play like its a rectifier (cauz it is) and it will sound like one. I do not play this amp like a rectifier at all, and its simply the best amp I have ever, ever heard, but If i want to cop the rec tone(4 6l6's chs 3 and 4) I have it, imagine that. No amp can beat this thing when its warmed up, no amp.

Congradulations on the Road King! I've got one coming with the 4x12 RK cabinet. 'Prog' has always been what I'm after most of all too,
though it's a vintage/symphonic style that really keeps me most fascinated.

The Road King/Roadster/Recto Pre are the only amps that I've ever been totally happy with in getting a fully usable gain spectrum.

Here's a setting I've posted previously that (on a Recto Pre anyway) will nail Steve Howe's semi-clean sound in 'America' for instance
and has many, many uses. I'd probably use the open back cabinet with tube rectification with one pair of 6L6's, possibly with the
Spongy switch on. This works for me using 57 Classic Plus humbuckers. With EL34's this would go a long way toward getting cleanish
Zeppelin sounds.

In Raw mode turn the output all the way up. Turn the gain as far down as it will go while still producing a suitable volume of sound.
Set the tone controls like this:

Treble 4:00
Mid 1:00
Bass 11:00
Presence 1:00

Playing single notes with low to medium power should give you a very thick but relatively clean tone. A beautiful light gain halo kind
of surrounds the attack of the notes. As you play with more power or use double stops or chords you'll bring in distortion but not an
obnoxious distortion.

You can add gain and concurrently drop the output level to taste from there. This setting sounds wonderful with an open back cabinet
and brings in a strong vintage character.

Thx man.
I'm into the newer Prog stuff(Dream Theater)...
probably because I grew up with John Petrucci here on Long Island N.Y.
I always loved the raw power of the Recto and the Roadking gives me all of that!!!

rizboog man you make me tear up just reading your insight. I've kind-of thought the same, goin' for tones of NOFX's Mark III-playing lead guitarist El Hefe, dialing as if I was going for it, cuz I could. I just got my amp back from a flaky drummer's house after a long time and have just dialed it right back in today. I'm yet to plug my 2x12 recto horizontal cab back in (i've got a RKII combo). it really does help though. I want 2 4x12s on both sides of me, just cuz it would look so **** perfect and i'd be crushing ppl with tone!!
