hey i was thinking about purchasing a new cab. I currently have a mesa 2 x 12. I was just wondering what would be better.

a) getting another 2 X 12 and just plugging both of them in.

or

b) getting a new mesa 4 x 10 cab.

let me know your thoughts.

You would have a bigger sound by having a 4x12 configuration but thats about it. If you want to change things up a bit you could mix speakers with your current ones (Assuming you get another 2x12). For example..... cab one v30 c90 >>>cab two c90 v30. Personally I have never tried mixing speakers but I know alot of people on these forums have.

2 2 x 12s = greater portability and a tighter / more focused sound. A 4 x 12 is going to be more open and 'bigger' sounding but it won't be as tight. It is a question of what you want.

What style do you play? If you combine a ported, 3/4, thiele, or open back type design for one of your cabs, you can tailor your tone in different ways. Having a more open back will give you better cleans and a more 3D sort of a tone which might be nice. If you are all about the crunch tone, investigate 2 x 12s for stacking as well as a 4 x 12. The larger box is no longer prohibitively expensive on the used market and they pop up fairly often these days.

Oh, if you are into hard rock or TeH BR00TALZ, investigate Mills Acoustics. I made a replica of their Mach212B and I cannot believe how tight, focused, and HUGE it sounds for a 2 x 12. Just be aware that a 4 x 12 will always sound beefier because of the added speakers.

i play alot of standard metal. new wave of british heavy metal style. Im not into death metal or grind core or anything just very classic. Im all about tightening my rectifier and my ts-9 does a fairly good job with that. Another 2 x 12 will probably be the way to go.

Im in the same boat! I currently run a Dual Rec into a 2*12. I am wondering if i should get another 2*12 for portability or get a 4*12 for the projection on stage and the enhanced low end.

The style of music im playing isnt exactly brutal but it does require some low end but also some tightness. Our samples are on the Myspace below.

Cheers,
