New Cab, and a few questions

Today I met someone who was selling a mesa 2X12 for $200. He said he had installed new black shadow speakers last year, and since he wasn't really playing anymore, wanted to sell it. When I arrived to check it out, it turned out that it is a vertical 2X12 (which is what I wanted), and after the money changed hands, I was a happy guy. Now that I have it home, I have a few questions:

The back is open on the top and closed on the bottom. The bottom half has ports in the front, but not the top. It looks like the back used to be closed on the top. Can I close up the top portion as well?

Also, they are both 8 ohm speakers, and both of them connect directly to the speaker jack. Does this make it a 4 ohm cab?

Definately looks like it was at one point all closed.
Also, if both wires are connected to the same jack positive to positive and neg to neg and if both speakers are 8 ohm, then yes, it is a 4 ohm load.
