I turned 40 yesterday (yep, I'm old...) and my wife surprised me with not one, but two, pair of STR 450's for my new Stiletto. I was worried from a post on here that perhaps Mesa was sold out of the 450's but nevertheless, my wife came through.

I haven't had a chance to try them but for those of you who have swapped out the stock tubes for 450's in your Stiletto, what did you think of the results?

And yes, I do have a pretty cool wife. :D

I put 450s in my Stiletto and it was a big improvement over the stock tubes and a HUGE boost from the JJ E34L tubes that I put in there. The stock tubes were a little shrill annd ugly sounding. The JJ's were boomy and dull.

I have to get a few extra sets of the 450s if Mesa is out cause they are nice.

Thanks for the response. I'm almost wondering if I should go on a binge and start hoarding them up!

To hoard them you are going to have to find some first. Seems like they are all gone. Mesa is out and doesn't expect any more. I haven't been able to find any dealers that have them either.

Good luck!

I went and cleaned out my local Mesa dealer of their 450's. 5 duets. Should last me for years.

When did you hear this? They're still on the price list.

The price list is out of date as far as the 450s go. They are out of stock.

I called Boogie some time ago and was told they were all out and wouldn't be getting any more. I also have checked with dealers and they are also all out.

If you are lucky you might find someone that still has some sitting on the shelves.

What voltage do the Stilettos run the output tubes at? That post you cited was interesting though it was originally about output tubes in a IIC+.

I'm loving the 450's in my Stilletto. Richer sounding to my ears, with a little more low end than the other Mesa tubes.

I agree. Definitely a rounder tube than the 447. The 447 seems kinda harsh in comparison to the 450. Especially nicer in the upper-mids. Ch1-Crunch just got a lot better for me. More "Superleadish" if you will. They really hold together too when cranked to ear-splitting levels. I got a blue coded quad, btw.

I told Phyrexia I'd record an A/B comparison then didn't. I suck, but these tubes sure don't. The changes are subtle, but they are definite.

A great upgrade. Worth every penny.
