So i've been shopping around for another cab (currently running my roadster through a basson 2x12)..... i love my basson but its so super tight i feel like i missing some high/mid sag..... with that said i've demo'd a freda 2x12, port city wave 2x12, mesa roaster 2x12 (cab), some dr. z cabs..... i love the spread of the freda and pcw due to their ported design but i havent found the right deal for me to pull the trigger (pcw goes for 650 loaded which is a little out of my price range for a 2x12)..... i also found a few great 4x12s that ive considered (vht deliverence, mesa halfback, splawn).....

so here's my position.... i found a guy that builds high quality cabs for great prices (used to build cabs for orange and hiwatt).... i went to him to see how much he could build a freda/pcw-like cab and we got talking about a 4x12 design i've been thinking about.... so to get to the point i've thought about a cab similar to a mesa halfback but instead of the top half being open back, make it closed back and ported in front. The bottom would still be closed back. As for speakers i was thinking something like eminence p50s in the bottom and the c90s in the ported half.

What do you guys think? good idea/bad idea? what i want to achieve is a cab that will deliver a very tight low end with a crisp, airy spread of mids and highs. Unloaded he can build the cab for around $250 (thats with the black taurus covering, salt and pepper grille and black piping). Also the price is pending i stick with his stock 4x12 cab dimensions (about 100 more if i decide to go with a slightly bigger cab which i might do). Also the speakers would be front loaded similar to the vht cabs.

Also if any of you guys can help me out with getting dimensions, i havent been able to find them for a mesa 4x12 half back or a vht deliverance... if you guys know them or can get them it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

No one has any thoughts on this? At the very least i could use the help with finding those dimensions of either a halfback or a vht deliverance.

It seems to me that the cab designs I see most often for sale are the ported cabs. I had one myself, and it did one thing very well (lots of lows) but it only liked loud distorted stuff and didn't like being paired with my other amps. Plus, it just won't help you on stage - the lows are the bass player's arena.

2 x12 cabs are easier to carry, tend to have a more focused sound and can always be paired with another 2x12 if you really need to move more air.

It would also depend on your styles of music.

I wouldn't recommend anything "unusual" (ie. oversized, ported, etc) unless you really need more bass. There's a reason most guitar cabs have the same dimensions.

But, of course, you're the one getting the cab - go for whichever makes you smile the widest! And your cab-guy sounds like he knows his stuff, so listen to him, too.

many good point... i appreciate the input.... about the ported cab and low end.... i;ve found in cabs like Freda Live 2x12s is that because the way the port is designed (actually its more of a vent) you get a very multi-directional sound.... other ported cabs ive tried like the ear candy buzzbomb and the genz g-flex are very directional and seem to just add lots of base like you pointed out...... i'm still up in the air about adding another 2x12 or going with a 4x12..... my Basson is so super tight and punchy and what i want to add something with a little more give but without being flubby or muddy.... man i wish i had endless amount of money to just buy everything i like and find the best one
