Hey all! Im new here, and just bought a 2 channel dual recto! So far i am liking it, but im still getting used to it. I was wondering if anyone had any good settings for a Adam Jones (Tool) type tone? Or any hints on how to get that big low end and low mid chunk?

Thanks!

You shall be spared the Dead Horse Beating animation.....for now. :wink:

Vintage, Tube rectification, Bold, loop bypsased, presence almost off, treble 1 o'clock, mids dimed, bass 1 o'clock, volume, master, gain 1 o'clock TS808 outfront set gain = 0, tone 1 o'clock, level dimed. JB's help alot. My guess is that he also used el34's.

Ts808 helps replicate recorded compression. Works for most of his stuff but keep in mind...

Opiate, Undertow = Marshall Super Bass
Aenima = DR
Lateralus = Diezel Vh4
10,000 days K-Tre Mick Thompson signature.

My speculation for the most part...but the K-tre is internet certified by sound engineer.

For Lateralus and 10,000 days, he used a ton of amps.. Aenima was mostly the original blueface VH4 with his Marshall and DR mixed in. Also, I don't think the MT sig was out yet when 10,000 days was even released, but I do think he used a standard Knucklehead. Not important in any case, he's used so much crap it's really impossible to tell, haha.

Settings seem pretty good, but I personally would use diodes going for an AJ tone.. his bass is pretty punchy. Not "saggy" at all. You might bring the presence up a teeny bit too. His tone is really only dark on the Aenima album.

I dial in a somewhat similar sound. Heres what I do. Loop on. Master around 9 or a hair more. channel 3 modern, diodes, set channel volume to taste, presence round 9, volume noon, mids dimed, bass 1, gain noon. I use an OD808 out front, drive zero, tone close to zero(I find that it just adds too much bright with the tone turned up), and balance(level) around 75% up.

I still found that it wasnt quite mid heavy enough, and a little too much fuzz up top, so I added an EQ in the loop to shape it a little more.

without the pedals, Id use the same basic settings, but roll back the bass to more like 11 and dial in a little more treble, and/or presence to you're liking.

Awesome, i will try those settings! I really need to get a TS 808 as well as an eq too. Regarding adams tone, its like this:

Opiate and Undertow: Marshall Superbass
Aenima: A mix of the Marshall, the VH4, And the Mesa DR. I think from how it sounds, the Marshall was at about a 50% mix, and the Vh4 mixed higher than the mesa overall.
Lateralus : Same as before for the most part, only less Marshall, More Diezel, and added some Sunn Beta Lead in some songs.
10K : He used his marshall the least in this cd, bumped the VH4 up even more, and then added either a Bogner Uber, or a Rivera MT Sig (he actually borrowed the one that the slipknot guy owns, since they werent released yet).

Like you guys said though, this is more of the backbone of the sound, even with all these amps, you would have to tweak and do some mastering post recording to make it exact. I was just looking for something in the ballpark of his tone, so I will definitely try these settings!
