hey willrock,

congrats on getting your mark iii!

My mark iii is serial 15574, labeled 8/85 near the tube sockets and DRG 27 on the chassis sides, so it's the same configuration as yours, built 9 weeks later, and also has the 105 tranny.

I'm an hour from Petaluma so I dropped it off at the Mesa factory and a week later Mike B. did the III+ mod on it. It's a beautifully engineered amp with an unbeatable lead channel.

hi there goodwill, did the mod made a big difference compared to the original sound? since you had the IIc+ tranny, did mike b modded it to original c+ specs? how was it? thanks man..

That was part of the reason i decided to have it modded, mike's impending retirement, although i can't confirm that he already has. IIRC, i think monstatone can do the mod for you.

The other reason was to give it more responsiveness/sensitivity to the lead channel.

Prior to the mod, my mark iii had a very aggressive, pushed tone which reminded me OF WHEN PEOPLE TYPE IN ALL CAPS!

It had a certain appeal, but i didn't want to be shouting all the time, and the mod gave it more of a singing tone.

Here is a thread in which i posted pics of the head when i first got it:

Here is a thread in which another user posted before & after clips of his mark iii+:

And here is a thread in which i commented on my modded head:

I haven't played any other mark iii stripes, but i think that the mark iii is a very well made amp with great tone. It definitely deserves the respect and reputation it has gained throughout the years.

LOL, just rumors and hearsay!

When i met him, he seemed young at heart and full of energy, so i don't know, but it does sound reasonable that he might be considering it. /shrug

hmmm, ill think about sending the amp to mesa when i have money to burn. i heard about $400, right? i might just do the mods myself since im fairly comfortable with a soldering iron, if i get the info how to do it. Any forumites here that played the "dot" mark III? how does it sound unmodded?
