Check out the peavey valveking 100 2x12. Its plenty loud enough to play in most any band setting. Its got a great sound both loud and at beroom level. All tube and works just like a mesa where there is no biasing nessessary,, just call eurotubes. Effect loop. Excellent blues tones up to heavy metal. And it only costs about $550.
Yes its made in china, but for an all tube amp, for a beginner who doesnt know if he will be playing in a year from now,,, you cant beat it.
Buy it from GC and you can return it up to 30 days later if it doesnt work.

Lots of well intentioned advice, but think sixveesix and disassembled have put forth with the most common sense and practicality. Best to get the most reliable bang for the buck without coming up against the dollar limit, allows more tone toys. Can't go wrong with their ideas.

the new line 6 spider valve would be a good choice. You can get either the combo or a head for under $900
