It sounds like bad solder connections or a bad power tube socket. Maybe it's just getting jarred around when the internal speaker is being used.
Most "Techs" that I've used in the past were not really into it for the tone. They looked at their scopes and saw that things were within spec when they injected a signal. A good "Bench Test," should also include a test drive.
