Mods for Mark V?

I'm not a professional guitar player, nor am I a tech; but from what I understand, the presence control is NOT a negative feedback pot. Even with your presence control on 0, you will still have negative feedback going on. My understanding is that presence & resonance controls are simply "tone circuits" within a negative feedback circuit, which differs from amp to amp. Some amps have more negative feedback and will sound tighter while other amps with less negative feedback will sound looser.

I actually learned about the negative feedback pot by perusing the Marshall JVM forum and reading about how different Marshalls have different negative feedback circuits, which therefore affect the dynamics and tone of the amp.

Hey Guys (or gals), Thanks for the responses.

Believe me when I say that the Mark V is the first amp that has nearly EVERYTHING i could need for my tastes (Owned Line6, ENGL, Peavey, Framus, Mesa etc..). But there is always room for improvement. Im really looking to be able to tighten up the low end or "tracking" on the Mark IV setting. This is by far my favorite "model" for rock/metal riffing but it tracks slightly on the slower side. EQ and Clean boosts do help tighten the sound to a degree, but not without some negative returns (thins sound out). I really want to run JJ E34Ls in the power section, or at least bias the EL34s hotter, something I did to my Framus cobra years back, and see if that does the trick.

I know there is thread on here about a Bias Mod for the Mark IV so I'll read on that a little more as well.


Anyway - im sure there is got to be someone else out there who has thought of modifying the amp and if there is...keep the ideas flowing!

Integrated MIDI switching would be nice, but not really even worth the effort investigating when a mini amp gizmo does the job so well.

Other than tubes..... the only mod that I would consider is a better cable for the footswitch.

For a 412 Cab, EVM12L, not sure if that would fit the combo, However may be to bassy for an open cab. Tried one in my MKIV and preferred the C90 (however if you like to play it loud all the time, the EMV12L will outperform the C90!)

I may consider custom premium select woods, bulbinga, maple or some other exotic wood cabinet for both the 412 and head.
