MKIII: did R2 mod sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't ..

So I did the R2 mod with a 250k audio taper pot and it works.... sometimes. other times it's very loud. louder than R1 but when it works I can balance the 3 ch. fine any theories? should I use a certain gauge wire or is my pot bad?

can you check the pot with a multi-meter?
