ive been looking into getting a strat but i dont need one that bad so i figured mij is the way to go. anybody have prefrences on what years were sweet and what woods to buy and cool reissues?

I could be way off base here, but I think only the Squires were MIJ. The first series anyway. I have one from 86 and it says MIJ on the head stock. I thought the ones thereafter were made in Korea and later Mexico.

I thought the Fenders were Made in Mexico. I've heard some mixed thingsa about them and it soulds like you really need to pick them carefully. I could be wrong

Might be more info here...

My Jaguar is MIJ, it's a 2006, I believe.
Awesome guitar with no quality issues at all. I don't know if they're making Strats or not.

There were alot of MIJ (or "Crafted in Japan") Fender's with the Fender name throughout the 80's & early to mid 90's. Then the yen started to rise against the dollar, & it wasn't making any sense to produce guitars in Japan, so thats when they started making Fneders in Mexico, where the peso is still weak compared to the dollar.

Many Fender players feel that they are just as good as US-made Fenders, & some would even say that they are even better.

Some of the vintage reissues are getting pretty pricey, but you could still get the MIJ standard & "Contemporary" strats pretty reasonable. They have a flatter fretboard radius than vintage type fenders. I have an MIJ strat thats a "Contemporary" thats almost like a standard strat but only it has a Schaller locking tremolo instead of a vintage type. Pretty good guitar.

not that I have information but the infomation above is not correct

look it up and you'll find stuff

MIJ was pre CIJ...each denotes a difference in time

Serials/Dates of Manufacture

Dating your Japanese made Fender by its serial is an inexact science but the following table will give you a reasonable idea of its date of manufacture. NOTE large scale official export to the UK/USA/Europe stopped around 98/99 with the 'B' serial.

*Note: From mid -1997 serials are prefaced by 'Crafted in Japan'. Prior to that exported guitars bore the phrase 'Made in Japan'. There is no intrinsic quality difference in the guitars themselves as far as I can tell from the many I have owned. Beware of Ebay vendors telling you the 'Made in...' is better then 'Crafted in....', or vice versa. It is the specification that counts, not the label.

I have a few strats- heres my opinion...

i guess it depends on how much money you want to spend...

I have two usa strats, a mexican and a late 80's MIJ Fender

The USAs are obviously good,

the mexican deluxe players strat was quite cheap and plays like an absolute dream... great neck- build quality is generally good... bargain!

The MIJ strat plays really well- superb neck action..... but....

I think it depends a lot on the actual instrument itself- you really have to try the guitar before you buy it, as two instruments with the same spec can sound different....

If i was on a budget i'd get a another mexican deluxe in a minute- but i'd definitely try the exact guitar i was buying first.

Good luck,

Paul
