Hey guys, i'm soon to enter the studio for the first time to record some tracks, i was wondering what Mics, and what Mic postions you use or recommend, if anyone has any opinions, my gear is as follows, if you guys have got pics or anything of ur mics on ur cabs that would be cool

Noticed Petrucci's setup for the current album, but im open to any ideas,

Cheers for your time,

Sm 57 slightely out of the center of the speaker.
Everybody does this way.
There aren't rules, your ears will tell you what you want but this way is the most used around the world

SM 57s are great for recording guitar, it also depends on what type of mics the studio has available. You can also try using more than one mic type. like an SM57 and B&K(DPA) 4006 combined sound great, maybe even toss in a room mic. You can try placing the mics directly in front of the speaker cone or off to the side as the above post stated. Really can you do whatever you wish, it comes down to what sounds best to your ears and compliments your tone. Often times people will use mic placement as a way to EQ your tone as well, experiment and most of all have fun!
