circa 8 minutes, behind Kirk, and a little later behind James...

What's the deal here? It clearly looks like a chrome/black recto on top of a mesa cab, but the black album was already released when rectos came out in 1992?

I know a few die hard metallica fans, like have there own fan club and I have been told several times that Kirks main rythem amp is that dual rectifier rackmount.

Wouldn't really surprise me if Mesa allowed Metallica some early versions of their stuff, but I couldn't say for sure. It does look suspiciously like a recto, though.

You've fallen victim to one of the classic blunders, first is never get in a land war in Asia, the second and only slightly less known is be careful of editing.

8:04 James Circa 1990 Recording the Black a Long hair, close cropped Fu Manchu like beard.

8:28 Short hair long Goatee 2 Channel in frame. Rehearsing and playing Intro to Enter Sandman.

Do I get the 2channel for pointing that out? If no you buy the beer next time in in Gvlle. Possibly the week of the 18th...

well, the interesting part is that its not even a rackmount...these guys are playing with the prototypes. Kirk's rackmount is all over pictures on the net, but rackmounts weren't even around in 1991.

Actualy i think the clip where you see the two rectifiers, one behind James if you watch further in the clip and the one behind kurt is from the St Anger sessions

bastards....you got me. lol.

I actually noticed that he is playing the ken lawrence explorer that he didn't get until much later. Furthermore, upon pausing at an exact moment, the amp has the big logo.

Sorry, Dave, I'll get the beer but the amp stays locked up!

a 2 channel chrome/black rectifier as well...sounds **** good. I wish I could dial in something like that at low volume.

The jam they are having was played and recorded for the classic album special and wasn't recorded in 91
They went back to one on one studios for the classic albums special

Kirk has a monster tone in that clip. The amount of bass is seriously overdriving the mics that the camera guys are using. It sounds like the fucking studio is being ripped apart at the seams

Well, not on the Black Album, but here's a video of James and Kirk both rehearsing during the Load/Reload sessions using blackface Recto's:

And another rehearsing more recently:

mmmm cake... if thats the load and reload sessions why is Mr. Trujillo with them?

My bad...posted the wrong video for the first one...I was watching one from the writing sessions from Load/Reload. Still doesn't change the fact they're jamming on blackface Recto's... 8)

They've got some awesome tone in that video where they play Battery. Good thing I've got one of those amps sitting 5 feet away from me or I don't know what I'd do!

don't be fooled by what you see in there videos..... although they have a gazillion amps in back of them that seem to be in use, alot of their tones in live settings come from their rack (triaxis x5 and some strategy power amps)..... one of my friends from the Metclub went to their annual BBQs right before St Anger came out and was in that jam area..... most of the mesa tones were coming from their racks, some of Kirks leads were coming from a marshall with a screamer in front and a mp1.... almost all of the cleans were coming from 2 jc120s and an old fender..... i'm sure those blackface rectos come into use at some point in the mix of those videos, but most of the time its from their racks which are hidden (i believe in the control room next to Bob Rock)
