have an 05 dual rectifier solo 3 channel head.... a guy wants to trade me a marshall 9000 series power amp with el34 tubes, its a 9005 50+50, a mesa boogie studio preamp, and bbe, with a gibson faded flying v with seymour duncan pickups in it.has a jazz in the neck and a custom custom in the bridge.... would you do that trade?

If it were a different Marshall poweramp, I'd do it - I really like the way a Mesa preamp sounds through a Marshall poweramp... and that V is a great guitar and has a PU set that compliments it very nicely. The BBE is crap for guitar IMO but you could sell it... If I wanted to trade a Mesa head for something different I would consider it.

BUT, like I said, I would do it if it were a different Marshall poweramp. Those things probably sound like a Marshall poweramp should, but they are humungous, very impractical.

i don't know if i would do the trade. reason being overall price. if you are patient you can get a studio pre for $250 and a boogie 50/50 for 350 to 500. not sure you can get a dual rect for 750. that being said the choice is up to you. with an eq in the loop of the Pre you can get any tones you want. i love my studio pre amp, it is the best sounding most musical pre i have ever played. there is magic in those boxes. i would tell him you don't want to trade but you'll give him $600 for the power and pre. unless you need the guitar. if you need the guitar i guess it would be a fair trade, i just wouldn't give up something for pieces you can get for cheap cause they are not in vogue right now.

that and my motto is keep everything cause when you are my age you will kick yourself for all the gear you gave away !

My motto is "If you see ANY sort of use for a piece of gear you consider ditching - don't ditch it." Even if the use you have in mind is the most ridiculous ever, there might be some other way of using it.

Example? I wanted to ditch my BOSS GT-6 when I got my Marshall, and buy a bunch of pedals... my MOM (yes, my mom) talked me out of it, saying I loved that thing so much when I was still playing SS stuff, why sell it?
Now, it's my MIDI switcher(for TWO amps, either separately or in stereo)+multi FX unit+continuous control expression pedal+"direct-into-PA modeller". :D
