I understand that most mesa's, including the Mesa recto's, are fixed bias. Can the recto be re-biased? If not, how can you switch from fixed-bias to self-bias?

I only ask because my tone is sterile and dead. It sounds good but not as good as I've heard some say that it could sound if it's biased much hotter...Any thoughts?

What tubes are you running? 6L6GC or EL34? If you are running 6L6GC then you can flip the bias switch to EL34 and run your 6L6 at a hotter (read normal) bias range as long as they are OEM Boogie tubes or tubes from a good vendor that rates tubes in the Boogie range because the Boogies are ice cold in 6L6 mode.

I've been running EL34's purchased from eurotubes that are rated for the recto...but I was also running a set of KT88/KT66's in the 6L6 setting...

I run a set of JJ EL34L's from Eurotubes in my triple recto and it is anything but sterile.

+1

My first go at non-6L6 type tube in my Roadster is the JJ E34L, also from Eurotubes. I was sent a quad that draws around 36mA in EL34 Bias. I believe this put me at around 55-60% max plate dissipation without modding the amp.

Not 'sterile' sounding at all.
