I discovered after I went from a Rectoverb to a DR to a Roadster that it was the v30s in the recto cabs I had that I didn't like, probably not the DR or Roadie. I have a Mark IV combo now with a C90, it's very nice. I tried it through the Roadster cab and yep, there's that mid range honk I don't care for...

Just found out my local shop has a Recto 4x12 with all C90s :D...didn't expect them to have one of those lying around!

Question for you guys....How would the two cabs sound together in stereo? Say V30s on the left side of the drummer, and C90s on the right? Would this work well, or would I just be better off just doing a 2/2 mix in the cabs themselves?

Really depends how my little test drive goes....if I like the C90s alone, yeah, I might sell it...or go crazy and run both in stereo!!!

Repeating this cause I really want to know....How would the two cabs sound together in stereo? Say V30s on the left side of the drummer, and C90s on the right? Would this work well (with different speakers on each side), or would I just be better off just doing a 2/2 mix in the cabs themselves?

Try the cab with 4 of the C90's. If you like it, maybe the music store will let you A/B the cabs. This is the only way to really hear the difference. Same guitar, amp and settings. I would be suprised if there is a big enough diffference in the two speakers to justify a mix. I just went through this comparing Celestion V30's and G12K85's is equal sized 4x12 cabinets. If you like the all C90 cab, buy it. Then plug in the V30 cab and put it on the opposite side of the drummer from you and your amp. It is not true stereo, but you will get more dispersion.

Intersting thread. Lately I have been experimenting with a combination-I
do a lot of soloing and heavy jazz-blues-rock improv in my original band. I use a lonestar with and open back single C90, and a 2x12 recto cab with V30s. I switch between the cabs, and the sound is totally different. The c90 is great for cleans, and big chiming chords, while the V30s grind and snarl, sound great with an overdrive pedal. V30s always seem to break up a lot sooner, which is good at times, and my Single rec never sounded so great as when I ran it out 90s.

There would be no problem with two cabs, one on each side of the stage. And well many people have mixed the two speakers So I would assume they sound great together. Besides you pretty much Mic in most places, so you just Mic the cab you like best. The question is do you really want to lug around 2 cabs and have the room for it in whatever you use to transport?

Maybe you do better getting a 2x12 with C90's and a keeping your Recto Cab, not as much to carry around and you can still do the one on each side.

Yeah but unfortunaly Recto's do not have as much Mid's and that is why the V30 cabs where paired up with them. Where the Recto Lack's in Mid's the V30's make up. Without those mid's you are going to get lost in the mix.

The big complaint it seems from alot of people about the V30's is the ice pick top end. I can tell you after awhile the top rounds off some, but it takes awhile of high volume playing to break those speakers in. After they are well broken in then you have a great cab with good mid's that helps you cut through in the mix.

I really need to get my Mark Cab with the 30 watt celestions hooked up and going. The 30 watts are suppose to be a nice mix between a V30 and a greenback. It is suppose to have the nice smooth top end of the greenback, plus the tight bottem end of a V30 as well as nice mid's.

My V30s are in a cab that's atleast 5 or 6 years old I believe, so they have to be well broken in....still a bit harsh at times....

I guess I'll just to try to get the C90s an audition in a band situation too....make sure they cut....

Just wondering - I guess these are not the same as the "Vintage Black Shadow" which come in Studio.22+?

Do you guys seriously think the C90s will get lost in the mix? I know V30s have a strong mid hump, but the C90s seemed very pronouned in the mids too...just smoother...

Opinions?

I have been reading the board for a while but I finally registered.Great Mesa talk here.

I have an ace combo I put 90's in and it smokes the 30's. I love the fact I can use the treble and presence past 9 oclock. Also the amp it a bit smoother not like 6l6 tones but still el34 crunch but smoother highs and tight as bass like its a closed back completly. Anyone else have an ace like that ?

90s all the way....

I have a fully sealed (full size backboard) Roadking 4x12 with both speakers and I like it.

I wouldn't say one speaker smokes the other though. Just personal preference really....

I do think they compliment each other well, better than the V30/GT-75 combination that some other speaker cab makers offer......

So the 90s sound good in the ACE? You can actually use the treble and presence past 9 o'clock? I've gotta try that!
