The rectifier is the same as in any other mesa amp with 2 choices, silicon (diode) or tube. The diode is a tighter quicker response, the tube is a looser, sag type feel (think of choice between bold and tweed/spongy power).

only 1 rectifier tube is necessary because it can only be used with a pair of tubes, not all 4. and each pair needs its own rectifier tube. look at the dual and triple rectifier amps, they have 4 PA tubes and 2 rectifier tubes and 6 PA tubes and 3 rectifier tubes (respectively)
 
What I wanted to know was, what features the 4 external switching jacks were intended to switch :?

Four ¼” EXTERNAL SWITCHING phono jacks are provided for remote control of the MARK 5 Channels, EQ and SOLO™ control from a master (possibly midi controlled) switcher. This feature is extremely important if the MARK 5 is to be used in a live stage set-up where all amplifiers and processors are controlled under one keystroke from a programmable master switching device.
