I finally had a chance to play a Mark V at a local GC. I played it through a Recto 4x12 and brought my Suhr Modern with me. I honestly wasn't blown away, but I'm actually thinking of selling something to get one anyway. I'd rather live with one for a while at home and decide that way.

Anyway, one of the things that I thought I was hearing is: It sounded like no matter where the gain knob was on Channel 1, I heard some dirt in the clean tone. I was in 90watt mode and Clean mode as well. Then after about 45 minutes, when the GC dude came in, I tried to demo that for him and it didn't seem so apparent.

So, if you're a Mark V owner, and can be really objective in your answer, can you tell me: Can you get an absolutely pristine, no clipping clean tone from channel one? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I only ask because this was an issue with the one I tried.

Thanks.

Dave

very easily. depending on the guitar/pickup combo, the gain setting has to be very low, especially on tweed. but then you got plenty of headroom on the volume. the cleans are a huge attraction to this amp. like most boogies it takes quite a bit of time tweakin to get it dialed to where you like it.

Do you find with low gain settings on this channel that it's difficult to volume-match it to the other 2 channels?

A little. The master on my clean channel is usually an extra quarter turn (I do run the gain down low though). It evens out any volume discrepancies.

Btw, channel one, 45W, on fat with the tube rectifier, some great cleans I've heard from an amp.

I am able to get pristine cleans with no issues. In fat mode,
gain 12 as in O'clock
treble 1
mids 10
bass 12
presence 10
channel volume 10
toggle switch normal
90W

When running loud I do find that I have to crank the channel volume up further than my other channels but to me that is normal.

Oh and this is using my neck pickup which is an SD Jazz.

I have been tweaking the clean channel in fat mode for a while and there were times where there definitely was some dirt. This became really obvious to me when I recorded a clean section and then played it back. I changed V1 and the dirt went away. I can now get a very pristine clean tone with tons of headroom! Here are my settings for a good clean solo tone(This one sounds great on things like Al Di Meola's Ritmo De La Noche and Floyd's Shine on you Crazy Diamond)

Channel 1 (Fat mode, 90W, EQ off or EQ on preset at 11:00)

Gain: Maxed out ( Try this, you will be amazed)
Master: 9:30
Pesence: 9:00
Treble: 12:15
Mid: 12:30
Bass: 12:00
Output to taste.

I use a EBMM JP6 with the original steve's special and air norton pickups.

Thanks,
Supreeth

In fat mode, I run the gain at 1:30 and there isn't any noticeable gain in the neck pickup. The same goes for the clean channel. This is on a fender american deluxe strat. You'll get some dirt if you crank the treble i'm sure.
