I think it is to make room for the footswitchcable when you mount the footswitch on the backside in the amp. Otherwise you would bend the cable in a hard angle that could damage the cable.

But I don't know, I just use it that way.
 
the only mark IV short head i ever had where i could successfully mount that **** footswitch on the back, was an early mk IVa that i had, that had 4 brackets on the bottom of the cabinet that you could wind the footswitch cord on.
i don't know if it was stock or not, but it was **** handy.
