Hi all , its been a while since i posted on here !!!

Ive just bought a Mark IV combo .... ive been using a Cornford Hurricane , which sounds awesome , but i need more clean headrooom (Hurricane is only 18watts) ..

The mesa has an EV Black Shadow , which i assume is stock ..
No matter how i try , channels 2 and 3 just sound "fizzy"

So i unplugged the EV and plugged in my Cornford 1x12 cab (open backed 8ohms Celestion vintage 30) and WOW it sounded great ...

Has anyone had any experience swapping out the stock driver ??? just wondering if it will go straight in
also the vintage 30 is only rated at 60watts ... i know im never going to run the boogie flat out , just need to know that its not going to cause a problem ...

Sorry for the long post , hope you guys can help

I have a V30 in my IVa combo. I did not like the EVM that was in there at all.
If you run it in Class "A: in Tweed you'll be safe. that 's what I do when I use the combo speaker, but almost 100% of the time I use my IV I run it thru a Recto 2X12 cab.

The Mark IV at maximum power settings is 85 watts. The V30 is rated at 60 watts. While the risk is there that pushing the amp to its max could blow the speaker, you say you don't run it that hard. Hell, I have had Mark IV's for 20 years and have never been able to get them above 3.5 on the overall master without sterilizing cats at 50 yards. Any situation calling for more volume will involve mic'ing the amp. So, unless you are making your ears bleed and have the amp up past 8 on the master volume, you aren't likely to blow the speaker, although it technically is a risk, as the amp is capable of producing more power than the speaker can handle.

If that happens, I wouldn't want to be in the same city.

I have a couple of extra Mesa/Celesion C-90's if you are looking for one. I might be interested in working a trade for your EVM if you want. C90s are stock speaker in the Newer Mark IVs. Not as bright as the EVM but more wattage than the V-60.

Edit: I just noticed you are in the UK. Well I guess shipping cost would make my offer moot. Anyway, you might want to look into a C-90 for your Combo locally.

I am running a Celestion G12 Century w/neodynium magnet in my MK IV widebody combo, and I am quite happy with it. The main reason I did the swap, was for weight. I saved about 10 pounds and it is still a hefty little beast to carry around. Again, my motivation was weight savings, but the G12 century sounds awesome. The only downside is that it is a bit more efficient, so the MK IV plays louder at lower settings. I would rather it to be a little less efficient, so I could drive the output tubes a little harder, but with this setup, I constantly get praise on how good my sound is. BTW, I am running Sylvania 6L6WGT's. These are the mil spec tubes from the mid 80's, made in Emporium PA. and this is a tube the MK IV was probably designed with. I agree with another poster that even if you ran a speaker with 60 watt handling capability, unless you were playing this thing crazy loud, you should be fine. I run my master volume at about 3.0 to 3.5, and it is pretty loud! I can't imaging running it loud enough to blow a speaker! Anyway, good luck.
